TORONTO and MARIETTA, GA - TCG and Ganz have been granted the worldwide licensing rights to manufacture, distribute and market a line of consumer products in the likenesses of the naturally frowning social media sensations, Grumpy Cat and her brother, Pokey.
Under the licensing agreement, TCG will create puzzles and novelty plush toys for the mass market, while Ganz will create a full line of gift items and plush. Products are expected to hit retail December 2013 with a major launch during the January 2014 gift markets.
"Our reputation as designers and creators of quality plush reassured Grumpy Cat's owner that we would capture the essence of this one-of-a-kind cat", noted Howard Ganz, president of Ganz, in a statement. "Our decades of experience in the gift industry meant we could act quickly when presented with the opportunity to work with Grumpy Cat Ltd. We couldn't be Grumpier!"
Michael Albert, president and CEO, TCG, added, "Grumpy Cat and Pokey have become social media sensations over the past year and the two are a natural fit for consumer products. We're excited to bring Grumpy Cat and Pokey from the computer screen to fans around the world."
Tardar Sauce first appeared on social news website Reddit in September 2012, and quickly became an internet sensation. The cat has since picked up an agent, a movie deal, has a book and more product tied to the cat. Grumpy recently endorsed Friskies cat food.
