Combat Sarcasm

Jill Seale's whimsical humor comes to the gift market.

As a graphic designer in the 1990s, Jill Seale had some pretty impressive clients, including the White House and Georgetown University. A native of Parkersburg, West Virginia, Jill attended WVU, quickly switching to a fine arts major when an “F” in chemistry ended her pre-med ambitions. She opened a Washington, DC, design studio in 1988, incorporating illustration and hand lettering in her assignments whenever possible to "keep the human touch" in her work. Fifteen years later, her yearning to paint blossomed with a whimsical collection of hand-painted linens. The reaction to her linen designs at the 2002 Surtex show convinced Jill to start licensing her artwork. Today, her Whimsy Collection of hand-lettered designs, including Sister Mary Margarita, Three Wee Kings, and Nun for the Road adorn the products of ten licensees. Jill, who works from the Charlotte, North Carolina, home she shares with her husband, daughter, and Lab retriever named Dean Martin, says her sense of humor comes from years of “combat sarcasm” training with her siblings. There really is nothing like family.

For more information on licensing, contact Lisa Ashcraft at Square One, (816) 363-3897.
