Baby

By Bessie Nestoras -- Gifts and Dec, 11/1/2008 12:00:00 AM

Baby continues to be an important category in the gift industry. There are four million babies born a year in the United States. That's a lot of baby gifts to go around. Over the last few years, we have seen baby items go from cutesy to edgy. The look caught on very quickly and continues to go strong.

Parents no longer want to decorate the baby's room with cute bunnies and cuddly teddy bears. They want items that reflect their design sense. And vendors responded to that demand. In fact, that is how many of the new companies popped up: Stylish parents who couldn't find what they were looking for decided to make it for themselves. The look is spawning a new generation of stylish children, tweens, teens and finally adults. We are all demanding good design. It's just now we are getting an early start.

Designs are not as juvenile as they once were. Baby bedding features textile patterns that are sophisticated, yet age appropriate. When animals are used as design elements, the illustration tends to be more contemporary. Even traditional items have a more sophisticated look. Colors are also in keeping with current trends. Another important segment in this category is clothing. Onesies, t-shirts and bibs all feature humorous sayings that are really more for the amusement of the parents than the children. Today baby accessories are just what older children and teen products are about: looking cool.
