Home Textiles Market Week
White Plains, NY — Home Textiles Market Week, running January 31–February 6, offers buyers a variety of educational, networking and social events meant to enhance their market experience. A cooperative effort between George Little Managemt.(GLM), 230 Fifth Avenue, and 7W New York, Home Textiles Market Week opens at 7W New York on Thursday, January 31; at the New York International Gift Fair (NYIGF) on Friday, February 1; and at 230 Fifth Avenue on Saturday, February 2.
Several educational sessions, including color and design trends and niche marketing opportunities, will be presented during Home Textiles Market Week. The seminars will provide a variety of “how-to’s” such as how to remain competitive when retailing American-made and “green” products; how to evolve with emerging Internet sales strategies; and how to market product to today’s style-conscious families. Other highlights include two home fashion-focused seminars: “Trend Eye NY,” presented by The Trend Curve’s Michelle Lamb, and “Color Pulse 2009” sponsored by IFDA (International Furnishings & Design Assn.); as well as two panel discussions addressing environmental issues: “SustainAbility: design for a better world – A Manufacturer’s Guide to Going Green” and “SustainAbility: design for a better world – A Retailer’s Guide to Going Green.”
In addition to learning sessions, a number of special events are planned, including House Beautiful’s “Ankasa Open House,” on February 1, at 7 p.m.; “On the Town: Ice Skating at Rockefeller Center,” February 2, at 6:30 p.m.; Gift For Life – The Party benefiting amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research; February 3, at 6 p.m.; and “A Night on Broadway featuring Legally Blonde The Musical,” February 4, at 8 p.m. All seminars and events require registration. SFIGF Celebrates San Francisco Identity
White Plains, NY —The upcoming San Francisco International Gift Fair is embracing San Francisco’s unique identity and focusing on those things that set the city apart as a trailblazer in emerging trends, and as a leading destination. The show, set for January 26-29, 2008 at the Moscone Center, will give prominence to green products, wine accessories and museum gift resources.
“Celebrating all that makes San Francisco the urban capital of the Pacific Northwest puts the San Francisco International Gift Fair on the cutting-edge of very real, dynamic lifestyle trends that will define the direction that consumers across the country are headed,” said Wendy Tonkin, president or Western Exhibitors.
A market spotlight on The Museum Source division will be augmented by a complimentary list of companies offering museum resources and special programming on museum store profitability; growth in the wine category will be complemented by a Wine Tasting Reception at the permanent showrooms of the Giftcenter & Jewelrymart, Sunday, January 27, 2008; a “Green Display” will highlight eco-friendly merchandise, featuring green products presented throughout the Fair, and a green resources list also will be provided to buyers.

NYIGF Expands Focus of 'SustainAbility'
White Plains, NY — The upcoming New York International Gift Fair (NYIGF), February 1-6, 2008, will reprise its focus of encouraging sustainability as a business paradigm through an expanded “SustainAbility: design for a better world,” a special curated exhibit and two-track seminar program. The SustainAbility exhibit, which debuted in August 2007, is open to all NYIGF exhibitors will emphasize new materials, as well as old materials used in new and innovative ways. Products selected for inclusion not only will be created from recycled, recyclable, sustainable, and indigenous materials, but also will be selected for inventiveness, newness, aesthetics and functionality. The exhibit, curated by Ilene Shaw of Shaw and Co Productions, will include products by Design Ideas, Josh Jakus, Mio and Zazou, among others.
As an extension of the display, two “Guide to Going Green” panel discussion seminars: one for manufacturers and designers and the other for retailers, will be presented on Monday, February 4, at the Javits Center. From noon–1 p.m, the manufacturer/designer session, “SustainAbility: design for a better world — A Manufacturer's Guide to Going Green,” will address efficient and relatively waste-free production techniques, as well as how to create products that are made from healthy and safe materials. The session is moderated Susan Szenasy, editor of Metropolis magazine. The second session, running from 2–3 p.m. is intended for retailers. “SustainAbility: design for a better world — A Retailer's Guide to Going Green,” moderated by Max Schorr of GOOD Magazine, will explore the connection between sustainability and profit, how to sell “green” merchandise, and how to adopt sustainability as a business philosophy.

CHA Goes Hollywood
Elmwood Park, NJ — The Craft & Hobby Association (CHA) has a special treat in store for those attending the CHA Winter Convention & Trade Show in Anaheim, CA, February 10-13, 2008. This year’s special show event, February 12, lets attendees travel back to the golden age of Hollywood when they head to the Hollywood Pictures Backlot at Disney’s California AdventurePark.The festivities run from 6–10 p.m., beginning with a stroll down the red carpet to be greeted by famous Hollywood "celebrities," including Marilyn Monroe and Elvis. After dinner, the party will continue outside with a live band, dancing and an exclusive showing of Soarin’ Over California, a simulated tour of the California coast. Tickets are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
The CHA 2008 Winter Show at the Anaheim Convention Center features more than 3,200 booths and the newest offerings from 1,000-plus companies. A special keynote presentation will be given by personal finance expert Suze Orman. In addition, the CHA has fine-tuned its educational offerings to help attendees maximize their time at the show. There are a number of creative new programs and others with streamlined formats. Topics range from business-building programs designed to complement each product category to new hands-on Demo-nars, along with a special Scrapbook Retailing track, and more.

Food Network Star to Keynote Intl. Home + Housewares Show
Rosemont, IL — A keynote seminar by Paula Deen, a celebrity cook and Food Network star, will kick-off 2008 International Home + Housewares Show on on Sunday, March 16. Deen’s presentation, “Paula Deen & The Charmed Consumer,” will begin at 7:30 a.m. in the Grand Ballroom/S100 of the South Building. The program is open to all show attendees; no ticket or reservations are needed.
The International Home + Housewares Show is set to run March 16–18 at McCormick Place in Chicago. It will feature more than 2,000 exhibitors in four show expos: Dine + Design; Clean + Contain, including Promotion in Motion; Wired + Well; and Global Crossroads, the international pavilions.
