Black Friday Polls Expect Big Turnout
By Staff -- Gifts and Dec, 11/22/2007 6:00:00 AM
New York — Nearly one fourth of consumers plan to shop on Black Friday, according to the most recent Consumer Reports Holiday Poll, up four percent from the 20 percent that shopped on Black Friday in 2006. And fewer consumers had started their shopping before Black Friday: despite earlier promotions, 38 percent of consumers had started their holiday shopping, compared with 43 percent last year. Fourteen percent of adults waited in line for early morning store openings last year, and Consumer Reports anticipates that 12 percent will do so this year.
According to Consumer Reports, the number one gift to buy on Black Friday will be clothing, at 79 percent, followed by electronics at 70 percent., toys at 64 percent, gift cards at 58 percent and jewelry at 40 percent.
Another survey, this one conducted by BIGresearch for the National Retail Federation, Washington, found that 132.9 million Americans are likely to shop on the Friday, Saturday or Sunday of Thanksgiving weekend. Some 55.1 million people said they definitely plan to shop, and another 77.8 million said they may shop. Nearly half of those aged 18–24 (47.2 percent) definitely plan to hit the stores.
