Sears, K-Mart Debut Christmas Club Card

Sears Also Debuts Beauty Department

By Staff -- Gifts and Dec, 8/30/2009 2:54:00 PM

Hoffman Estates, IL – Sears and Kmart launched a new Christmas Club card. The program lets consumers store funds on a designated holiday card to be used for Christmas spending. A minimum of five dollars is required to activate the card, and consumers may add additional money either online or in-store. Consumers have until October 31 to activate the card, and Sears and Kmart will offer an additional three percent at the end of the promotion on November 14.

The card revisits an old savings trick used by financial institutions: Christmas Clubs allowed customers to withdraw and apply a specific amount towards a holiday savings account from their weekly earnings.

A study conducted by Kelton Research, on behalf of Kmart and Sears, found that 58 percent of Americans are more concerned about how they are going to afford this year’s holiday shopping. Tom Aiello, a rep for Sears Holding Corp., said the company has sold 13,000 Christmas Club cards already.

Sears also launched a new full-service beauty, fragrance, health and wellness department in 13 retail mall locations in Chicago, Los Angeles and New York. Sears Beauty will offer an assortment of mass, specialty and prestige beauty brands “under the guidance of brand-trained consultative associates”.

Grand opening celebrations are being held on August 29-30 and September 5-6, and will feature complimentary makeovers, sampling, gifts and a chance for customers to win gift baskets.
