A Tour Through A Store

Every person who enters a store is on an adventure.

By Linda Cahan -- Gifts and Dec, 3/1/2010 12:00:00 AM

If it's their first visit the adventure starts like this: Peek into the windows. Come through the front door tentatively. Stand in the front of the store and look around: first straight, then left to right. Walk to the nearest display and check it out thoroughly. Walk around the rest of the store, avoiding the sales person. This visual tour tells a customer whether they belong in your store or not. Each focal area they see may inspire them, repel them or leave them completely disinterested. It's the job of your visual merchandising to inspire them.

Presented in the photos here is a tour of an inspiring new store, Marguerite, in the Sellwood area of Portland, OR. The shop offers a highly honed and edited assortment of European oriented gifts and accessories at a good variety of price points. Owner Daisy Allen Phillips has createded a comfortable and feminine sensibility that feels welcoming and chic at the same time.

I've been there twice. Phillips and associate Dawn Breese had completely re-worked the store each time. They are committed to making major floor moves to introduce new merchandise to excite and inspire customers, as well as keep their regulars from developing any patterns or getting into a rut.
