Aldik Reborn

By Staff -- Gifts and Dec, 9/15/2009 1:42:00 PM

Chatsworth, CA – After 60 years in business, artificial florals vendor Aldik closed its doors on June 30 due to the combination of the credit crunch and high fixed costs. However 20-year Aldik employees Mike Stadlberger and Zury Segal have resurrected the brand. Formerly heads of the marketing, import, and product development departments, Stadlberger and Segal are now co-owners of a new company called Fifth Element Design, doing business as Aldik, a brand name they acquired from the old company’s creditors. (Names of the creditors and purchase price were not disclosed.)

In addition to the name, Fifth Element acquired all intellectual property including licenses, phone numbers, web domains, customer and product information. However, says Segal, “We were unable to acquire any inventory as it was liquidated before the brand was made available.”

Unfortunately, the intellectual property did not include information regarding open sales orders or accounts receivable, leaving in limbo any customer who did not get their order processed by the old Aldik. However, says Segal, “We have processed some special orders for several customers with the factories to get them product that they needed.”

The new Aldik is working on catalogs of spring everyday product to be shipped this October, with product availability starting in January, composed of bestsellers complete with their existing Aldik product numbers, in new case packaging and what the company called “a very aggressive pricing structure” in a message to customers. Aldik is requesting customer input on products going forward, and looking to keep its collection focused on florals and foliage.

Currently Aldik is still ramping up: “We are now moving forward with completing a product selection for the new Aldik; we also do have some stock now and more arriving over the next few months,” said Segel, adding that the company was working with the phone service provider to have complete phone service before October 1. “We are currently working with several of the ex-Aldik customer service, product design management and marketing staff and look forward to growing that team in the future,” Segal told Gifts & Decorative Accessories. Aldik also hopes to restart its tradeshow presence in spring 2010.
