Frankfurt
According to show management Messe Frankfurt, approximately 104,000 people from 142 countries attended the combined Paperworld, Christmasworld, Beautyworld and Hair and Beauty shows, which were held January 30–February 2. Despite weather problems, about 4,000 more buyers attended than in the prior year. On the exhibitor side, 3,438 exhibitors from 67 countries attended.
“The economic crisis was much less present. The trade and industry are becoming more sanguine," Dr. Michael Peters, member of the Board of Management of Messe Frankfurt GmbH, said in a statement.
“People are more optimistic again. Exhibitors have the courage to present new products,” concurred Manfred Meller, general manager of the Industrial Association for Writing, Drawing and Creative Hobbies.
Show management cites small luxuries and environmental consciousness as overall trends. Color trends include lilac as a hot color for Christmas trees, while in home office white is hot. In personal care look for anti-aging products with a medicinal feel.
Cologne
The imm cologne show matched last year’s attendance of about 100,000 visitors despite being a day shorter, while the number of exhibitors rose by one percent.
“This was by far the most successful furniture show for years. In the midst of the crisis, trade visitors and end consumers alike have given us impressive confirmation that the imm cologne has regained its former strength,” said Dirk-Uwe Klaas, chief executive of the Verband der Deutschen Möbelindustrie (VDM), a German furniture industry association, and the non-material sponsor of show.
Show management Koelnmesse and the VDM have extended their contract.
The show reported a dramatic increase of 23 percent in buyers attending from North America.
Approximately 95 percent of exhibitors say they were satisfied with the imm cologne, with more than 80 percent are already saying they’ll be coming back to Cologne. According to the visitor survey, around 80 percent were very satisfied or satisfied with how they had achieved their goals. More than 80 percent of the visitors questioned would like to attend the imm cologne again in 2011.
Next year the LivingKitchen fair will run concurrently with the imm cologne for the first time next year.
Show management spotlighted white trending up, with purple as an accent, with matte black and blue on the rise, as well as adjustable furniture with multiple functions; dark wood, preferably combined with glass and stainless steel and LED lighting technology.
Milan
More than 8,280 visitors attended fieramilano’s Festivity 2010. For the first time the Christmas ornaments, games, toys, carnival and decorations show was held at a different time from Macef. “We have been very pleasantly surprised by the number of specialist operators who visited the show, and even more by the quality of these visits, which turned out to be extremely valid commercially, with a lot of contracts signed right there at the show and an equal number of profitable negotiations initiated by customers, in many cases new and also from countries which have never been interested in the show before,” said Gianfranco Ranieri, president of the International Toy Show, owner of the event.
Meanwhile the Macef home show saw about 90,000 visitors, an increase of 12 percent. Fiera Milano invited more than 2,000 top foreign buyers, 30 percent of whom were first-time visitors to Macef.
Side events included La Casa in Fiore, by Gruppo Classico Italiano, Creazioni and Creazioni Designer, devoted to artistic crafts, the Flexible Store (devoted to the opportunities provided by Visual Shopping and the Shopping Experience) and the “Una tavola lunga un secolo”, exhibition with stories, products and ideas.
Starting next September, the show will add new sectors Outdoors, Gardening and Pets.
The Macef in Town charity auction raised 13,000 Euro for Haiti’s child earthquake victims.
Paris
Maison & Objet, which took place in Paris at the end of January, saw an 18 percent increase in attendance by Americans, plus a record 24 U.S. exhibitors More than 85,000 people attended in all, a 13 percent increase over the previous January.
Notable features included a promotion for 10 young designers representing the next generation in French design.
Show management announced that in January 2011, Maison & Objet éditeurs will take place in the new hall 7, designed by architects Chaix & Morel, with scènes d’intérieur and Maison & Objet projets and alongside now! design à vivre in hall 8.
