The Sacagawea dollar coin was named for a female Shoshone Indian interpreter and guide for the Lewis and Clark expedition. Minted primarily in 2000 and 2001, it is often mistaken for a quarter. Some are still in circulation, especially in New York City, where the Metropolitan Transit Authority gives them as change in machines. The lack of reeding on the Sacagawea coin and the pinkish gold color make it easy to distinguish from lesser value currency.
