Pennington, NJ — Ceramic manufacturer Goebel Germany will discontinue production of its well-known M.I. Hummel figurines and focus its resources on the company's home accessory brands. Other Goebel lines include Goebel Gifts, Artis Orbis, and Rosina Wachtmeister Cats.
Goebel of North America (GNA) spokesperson Carrie Kulak told Gifts & Decorative Accessories that the company doesn’t know yet whether M.I. Hummel figurines will be made outside of Germany in future. “But we do have product that is manufactured elsewhere,” in Asia, she said. The Asian manufactured products are also based on the original Hummel artwork and approved by the artist’s convent. In the meantime, Goebel of North America isn’t likely to run out of German-made figurines any time soon. “We intend to sell as long as we can,” said Kulak. “We don’t feel threatened at all in this calendar year.”
Philip Ferrigno, president of GNA, said in a statement, “GNA will collaborate with Goebel Germany to implement a strategic plan that will best serve the North American market and all its stakeholders. We remain confident that the M.I. Hummel brand will emerge from this restructuring significantly stronger.”
