Washington, DC — Nearly 80 percent of consumers plan to celebrate Easter, according to the National Retail Federation (NRF)’s 2007 Easter Consumer Intentions and Actions Survey. They expect to spend an average of $135.07 per person, up 11 percent from last year’s $121.72. Of that, $37.56 goes toward food for an Easter meal, and $26.03 towards a new spring outfit. But the remainder goes to categories often carried by gift retailers such as candy ($18.53), gifts ($20.61), flowers ($9.63) and decorations ($7.63). NRF forecasts that total Easter spending will reach approximately $14.37 billion.
Discount stores will once again see the most Easter shopping traffic, though at 57.2 percent, their share of market is down slightly from last year’s 59.6 percent. Department stores rose in popularity as an Easter shopping destination, claiming 36.8 percent, up from last year’s 30 percent. Specialty stores claim a respectable 23.7 percent, online stores will sell to 12.7 percent, and specialty clothing and catalog retailers will see 6.7 and 5.6 percent respectively.
