Entertainment, Certificates Top Gift List

Stevens, PA — Unity Marketing published its annual marketing study of consumer habits, which surveyed over 1,200 consumers and found "entertainment and recreational goods" the category most purchased as gifts. In all, consumers spent $52.6 billion on the category in 2005, out of a total of $282 billion spent on presents. Gift certificates were the second most popular gift purchase, primarily from discount department stores.

In "giftables," or traditional gift products, candles and candle accessories were the most frequently purchased items, at 35 percent each, followed by flowers, plants and garden accessories, bought by 32 percent; seasonal decorations and ornaments, 20 percent, and gifts for pets, 18 percent. Buyers spent an average of $246 on giftables during 2005.

"Gift purchases represent roughly 10 percent of the total retail market" said Pam Danziger, president of Unity Marketing The typical giver spent $1,935 buying gifts in 2005, about 60 percent for holidays and the rest for occasions such as birthdays, weddings and anniversaries.
