SFC Tweaks Name; Releases Study

By Staff -- Gifts and Dec, 8/26/2008 2:02:00 PM

Chapel Hill, NC — It’s not just furniture anymore. The Sustainable Furniture Council is changing its name to the Sustainable Furnishings Council to reflect the diversity of its growing membership, according to Home Accents Today, sister publication of Gifts & Decorative Accessories. The non-profit coalition of suppliers, manufacturers, importers, retailers and designers boasts approaching 300 members representing every facet of the home furnishings industry, including a growing number of constituents in accessories, lighting, rugs and other categories. “It’s something that we have talked about for a while, and we are excited to be making the change,” said Susan Inglis, SFC executive director. “As the organization has evolved, we have attracted many members outside of traditional furniture lines.”

The SFC also released a consumer study which found that many consumers are planning to reduce spending on furniture in the next year. Considerations of long-lasting quality and fair price have gained until they are about equal to style. Environmental concerns are lower, but about are at least very interested in global warming and have started doing what they can, with the primary action being to buy green products. Few consumers have bought green home furnishings, largely due to the lack of awareness and/or availability of options. However, a significant number said they would be interested in buying this type of product if they liked the style and the cost remained about the same. Jeff Hiller, SFC marketing chair, said that the study forecasts trial of 30 percent for green home furnishings. “This is the threshold number for successful launches,” Hiller said. “Consumers are there. It’s now up to manufacturers and retailers to deliver acceptable choices.”
