Double Take: Summer Markets 2009

By Bessie Nestoras -- Gifts and Dec, 10/27/2009 7:03:00 AM

The 2009 summer markets have come to a close. From Los Angeles to New York and everywhere in between, Gifts & Decorative Accessories was there to bring you the latest and the greatest from the Atlanta International Gift & Home Furnishings Market, California Gift Show, Chicago Living & Giving, Dallas Total Home & Gift Market, Las Vegas Market, New York International Gift Fair and San Francisco International Gift Fair. Vendors were pleased with sales and traffic was steady throughout all of the shows. And with each passing show, momentum continued to build up with many vendors reporting to Gifts & Dec that the August NYIGF was one of their best shows of the summer market season.

Take a look back to see what you might have missed, and what you may see continuing to evolve at the upcoming winter markets. Some of the emerging trends include retro images and plenty of birds still fluttering around. However, there are many trends that are making a comeback, including damask prints, toile and roosters. But one of the more interesting things Gifts & Decorative Accessories found is the crown and fleurs-de-lis motifs spotted throughout the shows. These very regal design elements are certainly not in keeping with the times. Perhaps vendors are hoping to inspire shoppers to aspire to better days.

Sweet Girly Gifts
It’s known that of the two sexes, women are the biggest shoppers – especially gifts. There were plenty of products cleverly packaged that are perfect for gift-giving. And with so many of the products being so appealing, customers may just pick up one for themselves.

Cool Stuff
There is never a shortage of cool stuff at market and this summer vendors did not disappoint. From cute kids’ toys to dinnerware created by a tattoo artist, manufacturers were out to impress. Hopefully this is a sign of better things to come.

Take Flight
Birds are here to stay. Or at least that’s what vendors are telling us with all the bird elements found on this summer’s introductions. But no worries, birds are always a good seller and a welcome motif in the home.

Regal Gifts
Crowns and fleurs-de-lis were spotted throughout the showrooms at the summer shows. Displayed in a living room or bedroom, they add a regal quality to the space. Found on a princely frog and you add a bit of whimsy.

Ode to Jouy
Toile is making a comeback (again!). Like damask, this classic pattern is being used in modern ways on a variety accessories and home décor items.

Roosters
Could the rooster be making a comeback? We certainly saw plenty of these feathered friends around market.

Banks
The current state of the economy got many of us thinking more about saving than spending.

Kidding Around

Kids products that combine high play value and a design sensibility that blends with mom and dad's house are sure winners for specialty shops, who can market themselves as an alternative to cheap plastic imports and their problematic safety records.

EcoGreen

Green products have become more of a staple now. The products are not only good for the environment, today's collections also boast great design.

Just for Fun

Vendors' sense of fun was evident this summer with many offering light-hearted and fun accessories for the home and for the self.
