Wal-Mart Shrinks Stores

Roger, AR— New Wal-Mart's super centers, which carry food as well as general merchandise, are shrinking
to 150,000 square feet, from a typical 195,000 square feet, and will get even smaller, The Associated Press quoted Wal-Mart CFO Tom Schoewe as saying at an analyst’s conference near the discount chain’s Bentonville headquarters.
The company plans to use the smaller format to further penetrate urban markets. "We are trying to figure out how to make the economics work," Rueters quoted him as saying. "When you go into a major metropolitan area, real estate can be very expensive, so we have to find a way to balance that high cost of real estate and still provide everyday low prices to our customers."
Wal-Mart narrowed its guidance for square-footage growth this year, to 4 percent, or 38 million square feet, from the original estimate of 4-5 percent. It expects its sales space to grow another 4 percent, or 37 million square feet, in fiscal 2011. Last year, the chain added 44 million square feet.
I've noticed this too with Walmart's DVD and CD selections as well. The local store only has the a few popular DVD title and CD's. The TV series on DVD is only 1 4 foot section. I've called them up and they say that are going to expand the Electronics section later this year.
But for many consumers in my area, it's already far too little and way too late!! I already have to go online to stores like Buy.com.BN.com,DeepDiscount,Ebay etc to get my DVD's,CD's and books!! Either that or wait for my family to go to another town that 40 miles away that has every store with my DVD's and CD's!!

Not only is Wal-Mart shrinking their stores, they are also shrinking their selection of merchandise in their current superstores. The selection has been reduced to the point that I now have to go to other stores to get products I need for my cooking classes....looks like I won't be shopping at Wal-Mart much longer and if the check out lines are any indication, many others are having to move on too.
