Gift Industry Gets Own Private Equity Co.

By Staff -- Gifts and Dec, 8/4/2009 1:59:00 PM

Nashville, TN – Joseph Moore, former president/vice chairman of C.R. Gibson, launched a new private investment firm, DesignWorks Investments. DesignWorks is focused on the equity and liquidity needs of small businesses in the gift and stationery, decorative home accents, candles, natural products, personal care, housewares and publishing industries.

DesignWorks is looking for design-driven companies with at least five years of operation and revenues between $3 million and $25 million, whose owners will stay with their companies and work in partnership to expand business opportunities, increase brand and product awareness, improve operating efficiencies, and build profit and brand equity.

Moore and Designworks closed its first acquisition on August 4: candle maker Paddywax, Decatur, GA. The transaction was structured as a recapitalization in which DesignWorks Investments will acquire a majority equity position in Paddywax.

“We want to work as both investor and strategic partner where our capital, industry contacts, and business acumen can make a significant difference in the company's growth and profitability,” said Moore. “It’s a tough retail market, and we don’t expect much improvement over the next year,” said Moore. “This puts great pressure on many of the small, entrepreneurial companies in the gift and stationery industry. DesignWorks Investments is uniquely positioned to help them weather and overcome this trying economic environment.”
