Housewares Show Sees Rise in Exhibitors, Attendees

Chicago – Housewares companies that skipped the annual International Home and Housewares Show at Chicago's McCormick Place in 2009 returned this year, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Show organizers said the number of exhibitors increased 10 percent over last year to nearly 2,000, while a preliminary estimate put attendance at 60,000, more than 5 percent above last year's attendance.
Returning brands include Hamilton Beach Brands Inc. and Hoover. According to the Journal, some companies that have dropped their exhibits maintain a presence by meeting with customers in hotel rooms.
The Journal also found that small retailers received more attention than usual this year as manufacturers relaxed some of their order-size requirements to offset reduced order volumes from large retail chains.
Keli DeRitis and Michelle Codd, co-owners of Poggi Bonsi, a specialty kitchenware and gift business, opened their second store in December in anticipation that retail sales will bounce back in 2010, and met with a major appliance brand at the show. "The smaller boutique stores are becoming more important to the big vendors," said DeRitis.
