WAYNE, N.J.—Toys “R” Us today announced its plans for marking the 50th anniversary of Mattel’s Barbie doll.
Beginning this weekend, and continuing through the month of March, Toys “R” Us will provide fans with numerous ways to celebrate the fashion doll icon, including in-store Barbie boutiques and special parties in stores nationwide.
"Countless young girls first fell in love with Barbie doll in our stores. There is no better place to celebrate 50 years of Barbie than at Toys “R” Us," said Karen Dodge, senior vice president and chief merchandising officer for Toys “R” Us, U.S.
Toys “R” Us will celebrate Barbie throughout March, including the following highlights:
• TRU stores nationwide will feature dedicated boutiques showcasing an assortment of Barbie dolls, collectibles, clothing, accessories and other products. The program will include week-long (March 8-14) sale offers during which customers will have the chance to receive a free Barbie Fashion Fever doll with any Barbie purchase of $25 or more; or purchase Mattel’s update of the original Bathing Suit Barbie doll for the original 1959 price of $3. The week ends with a Barbie anniversary bash in every Toys “R” Us store from coast-to-coast on Saturday, March 14 from 12 noon to 2 pm, during which kids will have the opportunity to design their own complimentary Barbie party hat.
• A celebration called “Pink Party Time at Toys ‘R’ Us Times Square” will see the Manhattan flagship store’s two-story Barbie Dollhouse decorated with anniversary flair, complete with a pink carpet, a giant cupcake and confetti. A real-life Barbie will make an in-store appearance and take part in the festivities. Plus, the first 180 people who purchasing either a 50th Anniversary Barbie doll (pictured) or any My Favorite Barbie doll at the store will receive limited edition reproduction artwork of the 50th Anniversary Barbie doll.
• Online at www.Toysrus.com, the retailer will host a “virtual celebration” that will include a microsite featuring “all things Barbie.” The site will also offer the same values on Barbie dolls as those at TRU stores from March 8 through 14. Reproduction artwork of the Barbie 50th Anniversary doll will also be available at www.Toysrus.com with the purchase of the Barbie 50th Anniversary doll or any Pink Label My Favorite Barbie doll starting on March 8.
• The retailer will highlight Barbie Through The Decades with a variety of reproduction dolls based on classic Barbie fashions and styles, including My Favorite Barbie dolls, a series of six replicas of classic Barbie dolls from nearly every decade. The series includes the original Teenage Fashion Model Barbie from 1959, Brunette Bubble Cut Barbie from 1962, Twist 'N Turn Barbie from 1967, Malibu Barbie from 1971, Superstar Barbie from 1977 and Barbie and the Rockers from 1986. Each doll comes with a re-creation of the original’s outfit and an additional outfit from that time period, a reproduction vintage booklet and 50th anniversary collectible cards that portray a vintage image reproduction on one side and little known Barbie facts on the back.
