Product Showcase: Puzzles

By Karyn M. Peterson -- Gifts and Dec, 6/23/2009 1:00:00 PM

This week’s Product Showcase features puzzles from B.Dazzle, Buffalo Games, Outset Media, Pressman Toy, University Games and USAopoly.

B.Dazzle

Summer Wind
This year Kites ($9.95) joins the more than 130-title collection of Scramble Squares, challenging puzzles with only 9 pieces, each measuring 3 by 3 inches. It’s harder than it looks to arrange the pieces into a 12-by-12 square so that the graphics match perfectly, forming a design in every direction. Other summer themes include Hot Air Balloons and Boating.
B.dazzle, Redondo Beach, Calif.

Buffalo Games

Hot Topic
The 513-piece Dragon of Fire puzzle ($9.99), for ages 10 and up, is new to the Mystic Fantasy collection of puzzles. This lush painting aims to transport puzzlers to a mythical, legendary world! The finished puzzle measures 7 by 8 inches. Additional offerings in the line include The Sentry (a dramatic dragon/unicorn face-off) and The Wish (a tranquil maiden/stream scene).

Butterfly design from Outset Media

Magic Metamorphosis
The 25-piece Butterflies puzzle ($14.99) is one of three items in the new Magic Square Tile Puzzles: The Art of Sudoku collection, for ages 8 and up. Each title in the line (which includes the 36-piece Tropical Fish and the 49-piece Beetles) is actually two puzzles in one; puzzlers can match all of the edges correctly to form a 5-by-5 square or match the graphical Sudoku pattern.

Pressman Toy

Mischievous Monkey
The 46-piece Curious George Pal Size Puzzle ($8.99), for ages 4 and up, measures a whopping 18 by 31 inches, nearly 3 feet of engaging floor fun for the youngest puzzlers and Curious George fans. Also new this year are three 24-piece Curious George puzzles, for ages 3 and up. Each 12.5-by-15-inch puzzle depicts a different scene of the beloved character from his new PBS Kids series.

BePuzzled

Carle’s Caterpillar
BePuzzled’s 24-piece, double-image lenticular puzzle of The Very Hungry Caterpillar ($8.99), for ages 3 and up, debuts in honor of the classic book’s 40th anniversary. By tilting the box or the finished 9-by-12-inch puzzle, kids can see the caterpillar instantly transform into a butterfly. Also available is a 9-piece, 13.5 inches square The Very Hungry Caterpillar Story Time Puzzle.

Under The Sea
The 500-piece Where’s Waldo? “The Deep Sea Divers” Collector’s Puzzle ($14.99), for ages 6 and up, offers a dual challenge of both puzzling and search-and-find play. It measures 19 inches square when completed and—once the puzzling is done—kids can search for Waldo anywhere above or below the surface, in this original illustration by Martin Handford.

Kidding Around

Kids products that combine high play value and a design sensibility that blends with mom and dad's house are sure winners for specialty shops, who can market themselves as an alternative to cheap plastic imports and their problematic safety records.

EcoGreen

Green products have become more of a staple now. The products are not only good for the environment, today's collections also boast great design.

Just for Fun

Vendors' sense of fun was evident this summer with many offering light-hearted and fun accessories for the home and for the self.
