‘Wheel’ goes bust

NEW YORK—Days before its scheduled Sept. 6 debut, Hasbro has pulled back its Wheel of Fortune Live Play interactive console, citing technology issues.
The console received lukewarm evaluations during press previews in August. In at least one case, the game failed in numerous attempts and then worked only when still, and in direct line of sight to the TV, four to six feet away.
“Hasbro just wanted to be sure that the product is 100 percent ready and that the consumers have a seamless experience,” explains Alan Marcus, a spokesman for one of the public relations agencies representing Hasbro. “So basically, due to technology issues [it] decided to hold back on releasing the product until spring.” Marcus said he was not authorized to comment further.
Developed by Hasbro and VEIL Interactive Technologies, the console is supposed to work in tandem with the broadcast program, allowing viewers to play along in real time, effectively as the fourth player. Home players’ winnings are tallied and at the end of each show additional stand alone games are downloaded based on winnings.
