Dollar General drops chief merchant

By Staff -- Gifts and Dec, 4/15/2008 7:19:00 AM

A Dollar General Market storeGOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn.—Dollar General has shuffled top management as part of a “refocused operating plan,” the retailer says will result in greater operating discipline and a more strategic approach to growth.

David L. Bere, who most recently served as the discount retailer’s President and Chief Operating Officer, has been named President and Chief Strategy Officer, a newly created role. In this new position, Bere will work closely with the senior management team to ensure effective execution of the 2008 business initiatives and will assist CEO Rick Dreiling in identifying and implementing strategic initiatives going forward.

"I am pleased that Dave has taken on this new and critical role as we begin to implement our new operating priorities,” said Dreiling. “Dave has proven his value to the Dollar General team, and I look forward to continuing to partner with him to drive our business forward."

On the way out are Beryl Buley, the retailer’s division president responsible for merchandising, marketing and supply chain, and Wayne Gibson, senior vice president of the Dollar General Market unit. Both resigned from the company effective April 15.

While it searches for a new head of merchandising, Dollar General's merchandising group, which encompasses all merchandising, marketing and supply chain functions, will report directly to Dreiling. Operational functions of Dollar General Market stores will report to Kathleen Guion, Division President of Store Operations and Store Development.
