Alex Unveils Branded Stores

Northvale, N.J.-based arts & crafts manufacturer Alex recently saw the opening of its first branded stores thanks to two industrious South American importers. The two stores, both in Lima, Peru, will be followed by an additional location in that city later this year as well as the debut of stores in Chile and Ecuador by early 2009 if all goes according to plan. Mega puts Rose Art on Block

Construction toy maker Mega Brands, Montreal, is looking to shed its $200 million Rose Art and related stationery and activities businesses as the company, roiled by the recall of Rose Art's Magnetix line, looks to refocus on its core toy business, increase resources to and boost management's attention to its shareholder-oriented “Value Enhancement Plan,” and provide the company with “a stronger and more flexible capital structure.” Members of the Rosen family, Rose Art's previous owners, were said to be among the potential suitors for the Livingston, N.J.-based unit. CPSC Overhaul Progresses

The U.S. Senate last month passed the Consumer Product Safety Commission Reform Act, the government's first major update of U.S. consumer product laws in nearly 20 years, in a move sparked largely by 2007's toy recalls. A finalized compromise bill between its Senate and House of Representatives versions was in progess as this issue went to press. Among its provisions are sharply increased penalties on manufacturers of dangerous products, lowered lead paint maximums and mandatory third party safety testing. Posted on March 5.

Jakks Signs Swift

Malibu, Calif.'s Jakks Pacific signed a worldwide licensing agreement to develop and market toys, dolls and other related products based on award-winning country music singer-songwriter Taylor Swift. Under the agreement, Jakks plans to launch a line this fall featuring fashion dolls wearing Swift's most memorable outfits, role-play toys (including Swift's signature crystal guitar), accessories and craft and activity sets.
