Planet Toys files Ch. 7

By Staff -- Gifts and Dec, 3/24/2009 11:07:00 AM

Planet ToysNEW YORK—Planet Toys has filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in New York days before the deadline for the certification of a class action suit against the company was to come due.

Planet Toys was sued in early 2008 by the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization, a non-profit group that said it found asbestos in some of the company’s CSI-licensed activity kits. Planet Toys’ own tests of kits from the same lot as those test by ADAO found no presence of asbestos, the company said at the time.

The suit followed a late December 2007 move by CSI licensor CBS to compel Planet Toys to remove its CSI: Crime Scene Investigation Fingerprint Examination Kit (pictured) and CSI: Crime Scene Investigation Field Kit following lobbying by watchdog groups.

The plaintiffs in a class action suit over the activity kits have a March 30 deadline to certify the class, according to Reuters.
