Toys R Us adds layway program

By Staff -- Gifts and Dec, 10/20/2009 6:29:00 AM

WAYNE, NJ—Toys R Us this week announced the introduction of an in-store layaway plan to help customers purchase higher ticket items this holiday season.

Available in Toys R Us and Babies R Us stores nationwide, except for those in Maryland, the “Big Gift” layaway program allows customers to reserve toys, such as bikes and play kitchens, or infant products, such as cribs, car seats and strollers, early in the holiday season and make a series of small payments over an extended period in order to pay for them.

“Through the ‘Big Gift’ layaway, gift-givers can make important holiday purchases early in the busy holiday season when selection is at its best, giving shoppers peace of mind that they have reserved the exact item at the top of a loved one’s wish list,” said Jerry Storch, TRU’s chairman and CEO. “The program offers added convenience and flexibility, providing customers another option for budgeting their holiday spending and allowing them to make smaller payments over time.”

Toy categories eligible for the layaway plan include: bikes, battery-powered ride-on vehicles, dollhouses, play kitchens, outdoor play equipment and playsets, pools and water slides, preschool ride-ons, basketball systems, karaoke machines, keyboards and other musical instruments, televisions, indoor table games, and “big gifts” for babies.

Infant gear categories eligible for the program include: infant and toddler furniture, car seats, high chairs, play yards, strollers and travel systems, and bassinets.

Participation in the layaway program requires a deposit of 20 percent of the total purchase, including all applicable taxes, and a $10 service charge.

The program will be promoted in print and online advertising, as well as through in-store signage.

"After the holidays, we will evaluate the program and determine if we will continue to offer layaway in our stores," a TRU spokesperson told Playthings.

In other TRU news, the retailer said this week that basketball star Shaquille O'Neal will be the face of its annual Marine Toys for Tots Foundation fundraising drive this holiday season. The campaign officially begins October 22 in TRU and BRU stores nationwide, and online at Toysrus.com/ToysforTots. The program will include surprise visits by the NBA champion to TRU stores.
