By Staff -- Gifts and Dec, 1/22/2007 12:28:00 PM

NEW YORK—Overall U.S. video game sales rose 18 percent to $13.5 billion in 2006, boosted by new consoles from Sony Corp. and Nintendo Co. Ltd.

According to NPD, console games like Madden NFL 07 (Electronic Arts) and PC game World of Warcraft (Blizzard Entertainment) were the top titles moving into 2007. Sales of video games and accessories for consoles and portable devices contributed to drive the market's growth in 2006, responsible for $12.5 billion worth of the market's overall sales, a figure that was up from $10.5 billion in 2005.

Revenue from PC games rose 1 percent to more than $970 million in 2006.

Separately, Grapevine, Texas-based video game retailer GameStop, which saw holiday sales increase 23.9 percent, has revealed its picks for Most Wanted Games of 2007.

The following are GameSpot’s Most Wanted Games of 2007: BioShock (2K Games/Irrational Games - Xbox 360, PS3, PC)
Burnout 5 (Electronic Arts/Criterion Games - 360 / PS3)
Crackdown (Microsoft Game Studios/Realtime Worlds - 360)
Enemy Territory : Quake Wars (Activision/Splash Damage - PC)
Forza Motorsport 2 (Microsoft/Microsoft Game Studios - 360)
Half-Life 2: Episode Two (Valve Software - PC, 360, PS3)

Halo 3 (Microsoft Game Studios/Bungie Software - 360)
The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass (Nintendo - DS)

Spore (EA Games/Maxis - PC)
Super Mario Galaxy (Nintendo - Wii)
Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Nintendo/ HAL Labs - Wii)
Tomb Raider Anniversary (Eidos Interactive/Crystal Dynamics - PS2)

"With the Nintendo Wii and Sony PS3 now on the market, as well as Windows Vista gaming on the PC coming into its own, game developers are working with new technologies to stretch the boundaries of video game graphics, storylines and capabilities," says Josh Larson, site director, GameSpot. "Our list of 2007’s most highly anticipated games was created to help gamers weed through staggering number of games that will be releasing this year and remind them of a few games on the horizon that will be well worth the wait."
