EL SEGUNDO, Calif.—Mattel has tied in with Indy Racing League for rights to market toys based on IndyCar Series racing cars, drivers and tracks, in a four-year deal.
The exclusive licensed product line will include 1:64- and 1:24-scale Hot Wheels IndyCar Series die-cast cars featuring many of the drivers and teams of the IndyCar Series; kid-powered 1:12-scale Hot Wheels IndyCar Series Big Sounds cars with "real racing sounds"; and IndyCar Series 1:16-scale Tyco R/C.
Product will be available at major retailers nationwide starting this month, trackside at all IndyCar Series races and online at indycar.com.
"Speed, power and performance is at the core of the Hot Wheels heritage, which aligns perfectly with the on-track excitement the IndyCar Series brings to racing fans,” said Tim Kilpin, Mattel’s general manager for Girls, Boys & Games. "Our partnership with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the IndyCar Series, including drivers and teams, allows us to connect Hot Wheels fans of all ages with a real-world racing experience.”
Indy Racing League properties include the Indianapolis 500 and its venue, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. 2009 begins a three-year celebration marking the 100th anniversary of the track in 2009 and the 100th anniversary of the Indianapolis 500 in 2011.
The IndyCar Series season kicked off this past weekend in St. Petersburg, Fla. Its drivers race open wheel Formula One-style cars.
Kentucky Derby Barbie
Separately, this week Mattel also unveiled a Barbie doll marking the 135th anniversary of the Kentucky Derby.
The doll, Kentucky Derby Barbie, is dressed in a floral sun dress, faux pearl necklace and sassy spring sandals. True to Kentucky Derby fashion, Barbie doll’s look is topped off with a stylish, oversized white hat with blossoming flower accents. It's available for purchase through Wal-Mart, Walmart.com, Barbie Collector Dealers, the Barbie Collector Catalog, Barbiecollector.com and Thederbystore.com.
A life-size replica of the doll's hat, made by renowned milliner Christine A. Moore, will be auctioned through the Clothes Off Our Back Foundation. An additional 134 hats will be available on a made-to-order basis on www.thederbystore.com.
