PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y.—Retail sales for the U.S. toy industry were up 3 percent in the first half of 2007, to just over $8 billion, compared to the corresponding period of 2006, according to sales tracking firm The NPD Group.
The toy categories recording the largest sales gains year-to-date versus 2006 were: vehicles, up 17 percent; plush, up 9 percent; youth electronics, up 8 percent; arts and crafts, up 6 percent; infant/preschool, up 4 percent; building sets, up 4 percent; and games and puzzles, up 3 percent. Combined, those seven super-categories comprised over $4.5 billion in retail sales.
Sales in the doll category were flat in 2007’s first half compared to the first six months of 2006, while those of action figures and accessories and of outdoor and sports toys both decreased 4 percent this year year-to-date through June.
“It’s obvious that the new product innovations we’ve been seeing in the toy industry have had a positive impact on overall toy industry sales,” said Anita Frazier, industry analyst, The NPD Group. “Based on NPD’s research, parents believe toys are more interesting and stimulating than ever. Taking this into account, along with strong sales during the first half of the year, the industry is heading into the all-important back half of the year in a very strong position.
According to NPD, overall retail channel performance showed that department stores/major chains, electronics/video and mass merchant/discount stores and online sellers all experienced dollar sales growth when it came to traditional toys.
