NEW YORK—Mattel president Neil Friedman will be the 2007 inductee into the Murray Altchuler Licensing Industry Hall of Fame, the International Licensing Industry Merchandisers’ Association (LIMA) announced today.
The honor is in recognition of the influential role Friedman has played in the licensing business during the last 34 years, particularly his time as head of Tyco Preschool and then Fisher-Price/Mattel, where he is credited with overseeing the development of licensed feature plush (like Tickle Me Elmo) into a key category in the preschool toys market, as well as for a steady string of successful licensed toy lines based on properties like Sesame Street and Blue’s Clues.
Prior to Mattel, Friedman held posts at Universal Studios, where he was president of consumer products; Gerber, where he is credited with launching a Baby Looney Tunes line; Hasbro, where he played a role in establishing several licensed toy lines; and toy retailer Lionel Leisure. He also served a term as chairman of LIMA’s board of directors.
In announcing Friedman’s induction into the Hall, Charles Riotto, LIMA’s president, called the toy executive an “icon in the industry.”
Candidates for the Licensing Hall of Fame must demonstrate “continual and outstanding contributions to the licensing industry,” have been in the industry for at least 10 years and have made contributions with “ongoing relevance” to the industry, according to LIMA.
“This is truly an honor to be inducted into the LIMA Hall of Fame alongside many of the licensing community’s celebrated professionals that I have respected throughout my career,” said Friedman of his election.
Friedman will be inducted into the Hall on June 20, 2007, during LIMA’s annual awards event during the Licensing Show in New York City.
