Topps completes WizKids purchase

By Staff -- Gifts and Dec, 7/10/2003 12:00:00 AM

NEW YORK — The Topps Company Inc. said today that it has completed its previously announced acquisition of WizKids LLC, the privately held maker of collectible strategy games, for $29.5 million in cash.

The purchase is part of the trading card company's strategy to build the entertainment segment of its business, according to Topps Chairman and CEO Arthur T. Shorin, with ownership of WizKids offering "efficient entry into the growing collectible games market."

Additionally, Shorin added, a combined Topps/WizKids will "enhance the licensing reach of both companies and help us further leverage Topps brand franchises."

Since its founding in 2000, WizKids, based in Bellevue, Wash., has found rapid success with its flagship collectible miniatures game, Mage Knight, and subsequent collectible miniatures games based on Marvel and DC Comics superheroes properties, and the sci-fi MechWarrior universe.
