Mattel buys Blokus

Mattel has purchased the Blokus board game franchise for an undisclosed sumEL SEGUNDO, Calif.—Mattel said today it acquired Sekkoia SAS, owner of the Blokus board game franchise, and purchased the rights to the Whac-A-Mole game from owner Bob's Space Racers.

"We are thrilled to add both Blokus and Whac-A-Mole to Mattel's growing portfolio of fun and affordable family-oriented games," said Tim Kilpin, Mattel’s GM/senior vice president for Boys, Girls & Games, Mattel Brands. "The addition of these fantastic brands reinforces Mattel's commitment to offering games that are both engaging and entertaining for people of all ages."

Launched in September 2000, Blokus had been a consistent best-seller for Educational Insights. Extensions of the game include Blokus Trigon, Blokus 3D, Blokus Duo/Blokus Travel and Blokus Giant.

Mattel’s acquisition of Whac-A-Mole from Bob's Space Racers, Inc. includes the current Whac-A-Mole Arcade Table Game, most recently marketed by Hasbro. Mattel currently plans to develop other games based on the Whac-A-Mole brand concept in the future, according to the company.

Bob's Space Racers will continue to produce and sell the Whac-A-Mole amusement park game under license from Mattel.
