Toys will tempt Thanksgiving weekend shoppers

By Staff -- Gifts and Dec, 11/25/2002 1:05:00 PM

TROY, Mich. and GREEN BAY, Wis. — Retailers Kmart and ShopKo will officially start the holiday shopping season this Thanksgiving weekend with promotions in which toys, not surprisingly, will play a key role.

At Kmart, board games from Hasbro/Milton Bradley/Parker Bros. will be featured in the retailer's list of special Thanksgiving Day-only savings promotions, along with deep discounts on top-selling music CDs, family outerwear and holiday ornaments.

Then on Friday, when Kmart's more than 1,800 stores will open at 5 a.m. and stay open nonstop until Sunday at 10 p.m., the retailer will hold several beat-the-clock, six-hour specials on toys, apparel and jewelry. Toys will also be included in a two-day sale on Saturday and Sunday. Specifics about the toys included in the sales were not announced.

ShopKo will offer the first 1,000 adult customers who visit its stores on Friday morning a free 8-inch teddy bear themed around the toy's 100th anniversary. Separately, on Nov. 20, ShopKo launched a sweepstakes offering one visitor at each of its 141 stores a 5-foot-tall teddy bear. The contest ends on Dec. 7.

Additionally, ShopKo will essentially give away several toys for free to 'Black Friday' shoppers thanks to a mail-in rebate program. Nine normally $9.99 products will sell instead for $5 during Friday's first five hours of business and will come with a $5 mail-in rebate coupon. The toys include a Dream Baby doll gift set, the Kismet dice game, a Country Farm playset and a Jr. Adventures backpack with tools.

In addition to toys, ShopKo will offer for a limited time on Friday discount pricing on Disney videos and DVDs, Sansui DVD/VCR combination players, men's and women's flannel clothing, diamond stud earrings and cedar chests.
