ABOUT TIME
After an exclusive US introduction during holiday 2009 at bookseller Barnes & Noble, trivia board game About Time is ready for expanded retail distribution in 2010.
A hit in Europe, where it has struck a chord through newspaper tie-ins, About Time (pictured) is dubbed a game of “discovery, cunning and chance” for a good reason: its board game elements are just as important to its game play as its trivia questions.
The game’s twists include duels in which a player or team can challenge another player or team to a one-on-one question round with half of each team or player’s points hanging in the balance; “highway robbery,” a way for players to steal points; and “catching the plague,” which results in players losing half their points.
Other elements of the game’s appeal include: a “mini-rule” card that lets players get started quickly; every player or team plays every round so there’s no downtime; no wrong answers—just guess the closest to the answer to win; play with as little as two or as many as two dozen players; and six question categories—Heroes & Villains, The Arts, Everyday Life, Innovation, Word & Thought and State & Nation—based on headline-grabbing events. It’s for ages 12 and up.
The game’s UK-based maker, Brighton’s About Time, is “considering one or more tie-ins with U.S. online, print and broadcast outlets this year,” the company says.
ADORABLE ORIGINALS
Adorable Originals, creator of the Adorable Girl soft doll collection, will be debuting matching tees so girls can dress like their dolls.
AEROMAX
Dress-up and role-play products marketer Aeromax gives its popular firefighter theme a shot of added realism in 2010 with the release of Fire Power, a fire hose with backpack that actually shoots water—a 30-foot, solid stream of the wet stuff, according to the company, with just a single pump. The entire rig weighs just 2 lbs. when the tanks are full, and fires more than 60 shots from a full load.
ALEX
Arts & crafts company Alex is introducing more than 100 items this year across its seven categories: art, craft, bath, style, play, Alex Jr. for baby and Alex Little Hands for preschoolers.
The Alex Jr. line of developmental, plush and bath toys for baby is expanding with 19 new toys for baby’s first year. 28 new products have been added to the Little Hands line for preschoolers including Ready, Set skill building activities, craft kits and an interactive talking play mat. Young crafters can make stylish fashion accessories with Cap It Off Jewelry, Tie Dye Fashion (pictured), All That Glitters Tote Bag & Wristlet, Fringy Flops and Foil Bead Maker.
ALL STAR PRODUCTS
All Star Products is expanding its Bendaroos line of flexible building sticks. According to the manufacturer, these sticks adhere to virtually every household surface and are easily removed so they can be used repeatedly.
This year, kids will be able to store and display their building stick projects in the new Bendaroos Creation Station. It features a rotating plate, four modeling and shaping tools, three BendaModels for 3-D modeling, crimper cutters and 100 building sticks.
The new Bendaroos 500 Piece Mega Pack now includes three BendaModel tools, plus crimper and cutter tools. The product also features easy-to-use fun guides, traceable templates, and 250 rainbow-colored and 250 neon-colored building sticks.
Kits featuring glow-in-the-dark sticks and other themed packs will also be available.
AMERICAN GREETINGS
2010 marks the 30th anniversary of American Greetings Properties’ Strawberry Shortcake brand and part of the celebration will include a move to expand upon the 2009 launch of Hasbro’s fruit-scented toys in the spring and fall.
AGP’s Care Bears property will continue to grow in February when Lionsgate releases eight all-new Care Bears episodes in the new DVD Care Bears: Helping Hearts.
The company will expand its brand portfolio this year with the introduction of Margoku Yummy, the star of a preschool television series launching in the fall. Also new to television this fall will be a series based on Twisted Whiskers, character originally introduced in a line of American Greetings cards.
ANN WILLIAMS GROUP
Ann Williams Group is introducing the Talkatoo, a device aimed at helping busy families stay connected.
Talkatoo allows children and adults to record and share messages so they can feel more connected when they are apart. Talkatoo comes as either a necklace or as a clip-on charm. It will be available in six different designs.
AURORA WORLD
Aurora World’s 2010 introductions are led by an expanded assortment of YooHoo & Friends plush that this year will grow to more than 50 styles, including the line’s first seasonal plush designs.
Based on endangered species, YooHoo & Friends introductions include a Beaver, Yellow Tiger, Jaban Rhinoceros and Japanese Macaque (in 5-inch and 8-inch sizes). Like last year’s debut assortment, they continue the line’s distinctive look of big eyes and long fluffy tails, and make a “unique and funny sound” when squeezed.
Also joining the line are 24-inch original YooHoo & Friends in pink and blue, and a birthday assortment that includes two 5-inch styles, each of which plays the song “Happy Birthday” when squeezed. Other seasonal/occasional designs now include YooHoo Greetings, which combine a 3.5-inch plush animal and greeting card in one and highlight Valentine themed plush in four styles; a variety of Valentine YooHoo & Friends in 5- and 10-inch sizes that include a “Pucker Up” feature that makes a smooch sound and has a heart that lights up when squeezed. Other Valentine editions include purple and pink YooHoos holding an embroidered heart that reads “Luv Me.”
Spring and Easter-themed YooHoos include six 5-inch styles sporting bunny ears and graduation themed designs wearing a graduation cap. The line also includes “WannaBes,” featuring YooHoo & Friends dressed as other animals, such as a pig, bear, frog or panda; Springtime editions are available in three styles as either a pink or purple bunny or duck.
Not everything new for Aurora is about YooHoos, though. Mini-Fancy Pals–Tiny Totes (pictured on previous page) expand with 18 new styles ranging from 3.5 to 4.5 inches, six of which feature removable and interchangeable small dolls. The other 12 include domestic and jungle animals.
A Realistic Owls assortment features four styles of 5-inch owls that make a sound. Aurora also adds a Barn Owl and Great Grey Owl to its wildlife collection. A Whohoots assortment in its Aurora Brights collection features owls in vivid colors—hot pink, orange and blue—and two sizes, 5 and 8 inches.
Cheeky Charlie, Aurora’s 14.5-inch monkey character, gets new looks for 2010: Cheeky Charlie “Rock Star,” sporting a mohawk, guitar and T-shirt (14.5 inches); Surfer, with visor, board shorts and surfboard; and Zoo Keeper.
B.DAZZLE
B.Dazzle’s latest design in its long-running Scramble Squares line of brainteaser puzzles is Cows. As with past designs, this seemingly simple Scrabble Squares puzzle challenges players to line up nine 4-inch by 4-inch square pieces so that the graphics match up perfectly in each direction. The puzzle package includes a panel of facts on the subject of the puzzle, as well as a trivia question and hidden answer, all contained in a re-sealable, heavy duty vinyl travel pouch.
BABALU
Babalu, maker of FeltTales, is continuing its mission to provide toys designed for “open-ended play” by making available a collection of products from WJ Fantasy, a company it acquired last June. Key items include Shadow Books, ABC Building Blocks, My Busy Day—Touch & Feel Building Blocks, and My Tool Box (pictured) with Four Board Books. All of the products will be targeted at children ages 3 and up.

A new David Kirk’s Fun House assortment includes pull toys (pictured: Dally Dragon), stacking toys and jack-in-the-boxes designed by the creator of the Miss Spider book series.
The company’s handheld electronic games now include versions of Bop-It, Simon and Catch Phrase in miniature carabiner form.
In the impulse category, Basic Fun expands its Bakugan Battle Brawlers Mega keychains with two new series. Featuring the familiar Bakugan Battle Brawler ball in a slightly oversized format, each Battle Brawler springs open and morphs into one of six Bakugan fighters. Its rings, shafts and frames are multi-functional, with holes in the wooden parts specially designed so designers can remove the rings from the shafts. All of the parts store in a durable roller box, with small parts stored in durable cotton bags.

THE BRAINY BABY CO.
The Brainy Baby Co. in 2010 introduces French consumer electronics developer Baby Bidou’s self-named MP3 player created specifically for infants and toddlers to the US market.
Designed and assembled in France, the teddy bear shaped Baby Bidou MP3 player is easy to operate, durable and small enough for a toddler to carry around, but large enough that it does not present a choking hazard, according to the company.
Available in either pink or blue designs, the player can be secured to the side of a crib or held in-hand. It includes a built-in speaker, parental volume controls and other safety controls, equalizer function for improved listening, fade feature that gradually reduces the volume and lulls babies to sleep, audio output for headphone usage by toddlers or supplemental speakers, USB connection to download additional music, and 128 MB memory to store two hours of music. It’s also shock and drool-resistant, and the only MP3 player made of food grade plastic so it’s safe for teething toddlers.
In addition to downloading music to the player, parents can record a short message to comfort their child, or pre-pair the MP3 player with one of Brainy Baby’s CDs. Eight colored lights can also be activated to blink in sync with the music for enhanced audio-visual sensory stimulation.

In addition to reliving the Biblical tale, kids can use the set to play six games and educational activities.

TRANCE4MATION GAMES
Trance4mation Games’ Keep It Real Rx is a conversation-spurring board game that “brings people face-to-face with their humanity” according to creator Leslie Robinson. It provides a space for people to share personal beliefs, convictions, feelings, fantasies, memories, reflections, imaginations and secret desires aloud through questions such as “If you had the choice, what race would you want to be?” and “Do you truly believe in an 'eye for an eye’ or would you 'turn the other cheek’?”
UNCLE MILTON
Uncle Milton Industries is introducing the newest additions to its Star Wars Science line of fun and educational toys this year. Designed to entertain and educate, these toys teach the scientific workings and applications behind optics, animation, entomology and much more.
Highlights from Uncle Milton’s 2010 new product introductions include the Remote Controlled Lightsaber Room Light, which lets kids ages 6 and up construct a lightsaber and mount the creation as a room light on the wall. It features eight color effects and a wireless remote control. Also available will be a Mini Lightsaber Tech Lab, which allows a kid to build an 8.25-inch mini version of the lightsaber used by Anakin Skywalker.
When the lights are out, children may be inclined to give the new Death Star Planetarium a whirl. This table top Death Star opens up into a planetary projector to display the cosmos on a ceiling. Users can opt to view a map of the worlds that make up the Star Wars galaxy, or view the Earth’s own night sky.
Emerging scientists who prefer to spend their time outdoors may be drawn to the Clone Trooper Recon Kit, which equips a kid to explore his backyard. The kit includes a soil sifter, magnifier, a special reconnaissance tool and a built-in searchlight. Once a child discovers an interesting life form, the kit transforms into an insect viewer for examination purposes. Friends of nature may similarly be drawn to The Clone Wars Ant Farm Habitat, a twist on the classic Ant Farm, which allows ants to dig and tunnel beneath two Clone Wars planet landscapes.
Finally, the new Holographic Animation Lab teaches kids about animation, persistence of vision and the principles of a zoetrope as they work to bring their favorite Star Wars: The Clone Wars characters to life.

A Uniset Magic Stickers Drawing set consists of booklet with drawing paper, Magic Stickers and coloring pencils, also bearing Disney licensed characters.
UNIVERSITY GAMES
University Games is offering a collection of new games for audiences both young and old.
The company is introducing a variety of new games for the preschool market this year. Yoohoo, Can You Moo? is a card-based matching game that requires players to challenge their opponents to imitate animal sounds and match cards with the ultimate goal of creating their own barnyard of animals.
Also new for the toddler set are two games bearing the Eric Carle license. Eric Carle’s 123 Rooster’s Off to See the World Game introduces players to number recognition and counting. Once players are comfortable with counting animals, the double-sided game board introduces them to simple addition and subtraction. Eric Carle Match-ominoes includes three stand-alone games with matching, bingo and dominoes all in one box.
University Games also plans to bring to market two products featuring artwork from Mo Willems’ Pigeon book series. The Pigeon’s Matching Game is said to encourage young learners to use their visual literacy and coordination skills to match tiles. The Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus Game (pictured) requires players to strategize to become the first player to move his or her bus to the center of the board without allowing the Pigeon to drive it.
For older audiences, Callisto is a new board game targeted at players ages 7 and up. It encourages participants to compete to be the player with the most tiles on the board by the end of the game. The twist? Players must be sure to place their tiles next to other tiles of the same color.
THE VERMONT TEDDY BEAR CO.
The Vermont Teddy Bear Co., known best for its plush delivery service, comes to Toy Fair in 2010 to unveil its newest designs and make them available to other retailers for the first time. [Editor’s note: Historically, Vermont Teddy Bear’s proprietary plush were only sold as gift items directly to consumers. This year marks the first time in decades, according to the company, that it has modified its plush designs to make products specifically for young children.]
The company’s line is led by Soft Floppy Bears (pictured), a series of bears with huggable, floppy bodies; Take-Along-Teddies, featuring washable fur and a soft flat body that’s good for bedtime or travel; Go Green Bears, a series of plush bears with fur made from 100 percent recycled post-consumer plastic bottles as well as 100 percent recycled stuffing; and Woolen Bears, made using all-natural 100 percent wool.
The Take-Along-Teddies are available in six colors: Light Blue, Light Pink, Sapphire, Holstein, Maple, Snow and Espresso. The Go Green Bears come in Sky Blue or Sage Green. The Woolen Bears come in Cocoa or Cream. All are handmade in Vermont and feature the company’s signature “Born in Vermont” eyes and “tush tag” confirming their unconditional lifetime guarantee.
VIVID IMAGINATIONS
British toymaker Vivid Imaginations makes its official US debut in 2010 with a line of animatronic plush animals distributed by Rainbow Concepts here and in Canada.
Each AniMagic plush pet is a lap-sized, interactive toy that moves and makes real animal sounds. When their backs are petted they whimper or make the trademark sound of their species—the pony whinnies, the puppies bark, the kittens meow—as well as move their heads and twist their necks, wiggle their ears, blink their eyes and (if they’re puppies) wag their tails.
WABA FUN
Construction toy maker WABA Fun adds a line of buildable characters to its Superstructs line for 2010. Dubbed Arc-a-Teks, the debut series has three Earth Modern themed sets—Earth, Sea and Sky—with each set building two characters simultaneously. Included collector cards contain a secret code to access a branded website.
WILD PLANET
Wild Planet extends its relationship with Crayola for a new line of games, plus grows its mainstay Spy Gear line and assortment of games that get kids moving.
The company will release its first line of Crayola-licensed games in fall 2010. The games are an extension of the partnership between the two companies who together launched Crayon Town activity sets in 2009. The new games—Guess My Picture, Doodle Match and Color Mix-A-Roo—focus on recreating images and matching and mixing colors, all without the use (and potential mess) of traditional art supplies. Guess My Picture has players create and identify pictures made from different shapes in a game that’s part puzzle, part art project and part guessing game. Doodle Match is a memory game in which players practice matching colors and objects after coloring images outlined on specially coated write-on, wipe-off cardboard tiles. Color Mix-A-Roo is a no-mess game of color-mixing magic that teaches basic color-blending skills.
Flipper Frenzy joins the company’s preschool-oriented Smart Step Games brand of products that encourage physical activity. It promotes movement and coordination and practices early learning skills, including letters, colors and more by way of four sea creatures—a seahorse, turtle, octopus and fish—and an electronic hand-held scoop shaped like a smiling shark. Kids must race to retrieve from throughout their house the creatures called out by the shark. In addition to the main game, Flipper Frenzy also has a hide-and-seek mode and a listening game called Sharky Says.
Also new is an updated version of the company’s original and bestselling get-moving game, Hyper Dash. The new Hyper Dash Extreme boasts more game options and more math than its predecessor, plus gets an upgrade that offers moving targets instead of static ones thanks to a redesigned electronic hand-held tagger that picks up targets and pops them back out every time a new target is tagged. As a result, the game’s layout changes continuously.
The Spy Gear line expands to include three new playthings: the Lie Detector Kit, a portable truth-detecting device; Security Scanner (pictured), a hand-held metal detector with a light and sound alarm; and Spy Decoy Listener, a listening device disguised as a cell phone. In addition, the new Spy Video TRAKR, the third-generation of Wild Planet’s Spy Video line or radio-controlled spy vehicles, sends live digital video and audio to a full-color LCD monitor and speaker on its remote control—and can save the footage to an SD card. Plus, thanks to a USB connection, users can write and download their own apps for the toy or download apps from other users through an online community site.
WILD REPUBLIC
Wild Republic’s new product lines for 2010 include trigger-action toys, all-terrain toy vehicles, interchangeable figures and fabric covered inflatables, in addition to extensions of its existing playthings.
Chompers trigger-action toys include T-Rex and Velociraptor dinosaurs, Great White Shark, Tiger, White Tiger and Lion designs. They have oversized heads and bodies sized to a child’s hand and mouths that open and close when a child operates the animal’s arm/leg lever.
Crunchers are four-wheeling adventure toy vehicles topped with cool animal shapes, such as Shark, Tiger, Crocodile or Triceratops. When their wheels roll, they activate jaw crunching action.
Bouncers are fabric animal shapes that have an inflatable ball inside. When air is pumped into the softly covered Penguin, Elephant, Dolphin, Triceratops, Tiger or T-Rex, their newly rounded bellies offer beach ball-like bouncing fun.
Mini Morphs are the latest in the line of Wild Republic’s interchangeable, mix-and-match snap-together toys. They come in North American, African, Aquatic and Dinosaurs sets. Like the larger Morphs, each set is interchangeable with the others so all sets can be combined for unlimited arms, legs, wings, fins, heads and body combinations.
The Mongo Grinders line of skateboarding zoo animal figures adds new characters Kickflip Tree Frog, Backslide Crocodile, Nosegrind Rhino and Bail Wolf, among others. New combination sets have been designed with ramps, boards and environment backdrops.
The Wee Lil’ Keeper colorful Guardian of Nature mini dolls add-in a new light- up feature to the fins of the original Mermaids (pictured), and introduce four Wee Lil’ Fairy friends, which have light-up wings.
WORX TOYS
Worx Toys’ debut line offers toys that let curious kids look inside them to see how they work. The line includes a fire engine, ambulance, police helicopter and race car. Each explains how the vehicle’s components work.
WOWWEE
WowWee enters 2010 with new plush, doll and role-play lines.
The Alive plush line adds Woodland Friends, six collectible, 4-inch baby animals. When squeezed gently they make baby animal sounds. Designs include Chick, Bunny, Red Fox, Owl, Raccoon and Hedgehog.
The Perfect Puppy uses Alive Touch technology to allow it to distinguish between a tickle, pat, stroke and hug, and respond appropriately. The life-size puppy makes more than 20 life-life sounds, plus has animated ears, mouth, eyes and tail, a poseable head and legs, plus a collar and brush. Two styles are offered: Buddy the Goldendoodle and Bella the Portugese Water Dog.
Hot Locks is a line of spunky, funky dolls with fabulous hair. The line includes Lily, a musical animal lover, intelligent and drama-loving Nahla, determined and kind-hearted Ami and artistic, attention-seeking Harlow. Four Deluxe dolls have twice as much hair and include unique hair accessories and hair extensions.
Hot Locks Braid & Style Salon with Doll is a playset that lets girls automatically braid its included 14-inch hair extensions that girls themselves can wear or place on the included mannequin to hold. It includes an exclusive Hot Locks doll
Hot Locks Curl & Style Salon with Doll is a hair salon playset designed to let girls change their Hot Locks dolls’ hair from straight to soft curls.
WowWee’s EZ2Make! Line adds the Entenmann’s Donut Maker Playset (pictured), which lets kids make their own donuts in the microwave in just one minute, and the IHOP Breakfast Maker Playset that makes breakfast favorites like pancakes and waffles.
THE YOUNG SCIENTISTS CLUB
The Young Scientists Club’s releases for spring 2010 are themed around solar energy, animal tracking and dinosaurs.
The company’s Magic School Bus line will soon include: Magic School Bus Solar Energy to the Rescue, a kit that gives kids the chance to explore the greenhouse effect, capture carbon dioxide, recreate global warming in a bottle, use a solar panel to spin a fan, make a solar secret code, design solar spinners and watch solar energy inflate balloons, among other activities; and Magic School Bus Back in Time with the Dinosaurs, with experiments that let kids create a timeline, design a diorama, build a wooden dinosaur replica, cast and mold fossils, mold clay dinosaur teeth, simulate a dinosaur dig and fold 3-D dinosaurs.
The company’s Science on a Tracking Expedition teaches kids about animal tracking through hands-on science experiments and activities that let them identify animal tracks, learn about the animals that make the tracks, cast animal tracks, play a tracking game, create animal track prints, design an animal track poster, and explore real animal tracks in nature. The similarly themed Animal Tracks (pictured) game pits players in a contest to match the animals to their tracks while playing concentration, bingo, and guess the tracks games.
ZIZZLE
Revived toymaker Zizzle shepherds Myachi’s line of collectible hand sacks to toy store shelves in 2010.
Myachi combines the fluid hand motions of martial arts with the full-body coordination of action sports in a foot bag-style game in which the only rule is that there are no palms allowed. The Myachi sacks are sold in a series of six to 12 different designs that are then retired, creating a limited edition out of each one sold. There are now approximately 50 different Myachi Original Hand Sacks available for sale; upwards of 500 different styles have been manufactured to date.
