On gossamer wings
For sparkly decorative butterflies without having to squish real ones under glass, try Creativity for Kids' Butterfly Bedroom kit (pictured). It comes with three gossamer butterflies, sparkle paint and more rhinestones than Elvis. To complement the soft colors of these winged insects, Good Morning Alarm Clock is a translucent working timepiece with paints and sparkling rhinestones. It's a hip, bedside accent.
For something completely different, check out The Glob. It's a nylon tube stuffed with crystals and seeds. Add water and it will grow 10 times bigger and sprout grass. This frightful creation includes various feathers and wiggly eyes to complete the discomforting effect.
Stomp! The musical
More musical fun from Neurosmith, Musini senses vibrations to produce five different styles of music. Turn the style dial from classical to jazz and stomp around a bit. Very simple. The strength and speed of the vibration determines the tempos and rhythms of the tones. Perhaps a bit of Schönberg for the vibrations caused by a temper tantrum?
Trivia goes digital
The questions range from simple ("Name the person who created Harry Potter") to rather difficult ("One tagline for this film stated, "A tale of murder, lust, greed, revenge and seafood"). The game is Scene It? but it's no ordinary trivia contest. It includes a DVD used for particular challenges based on clips from actual movies. The Monopoly-style player tokens are a neat touch. The answers, by the way, are J.K. Rowling and A Fish Called Wanda.
Balancing act
Want to grab some air but the ski lift's down? Eager to hit the outdoor half-pipe but it's raining? Check out Pivit (pictured). A modern update of the wooden bongo board, Pivit is a fiberglass balance board with a single wheel as the pivot point. The rugged board can take a beating and training blocks are, thankfully, available for first-timers.
Purple Xmas
Would it really and truly be Christmas without Barney? It would certainly be less purple. For those who prefer a mauve holiday, HIT Entertainment has released Barney's Christmas Star on DVD and VHS. The didactic dino trims the tree and breaks into such songs as "Deck the Halls" and "O Christmas Tree." A medley crumb also pays homage to Hanukkah and Kwanza. The story revolves around a missing star to top the tree. Barney and friends rummage through one girls' grandma's attic to find the ornament. Hijinks ensue.
Turtle power
In keeping with the apparent industry requirement that any new toy have some tie-in with the '80s, Playmates is unleashing revamped Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles figures (pictured). The half-shell heroes stand five inches and are sculpted more closely to the original Eastman-Laird comics than earlier incarnations. Products ship in December for a shelf life starting in January. The first wave includes the fantastic four (Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, Michelangelo), mentor Splinter and baddies Shredder and Foot Ninja. Second wave hits in April.
