WB puts muscle behind ¡Mucha Lucha!

By Staff -- Gifts and Dec, 7/17/2003 2:12:00 PM

BURBANK, Calif. — Warner Bros.' animated television series ¡Mucha Lucha! is getting a full-court press when it comes to franchise building, with new projects based on the property pending from a host of Warner Bros. and AOL Time Warner units.

In addition to their current TV series on Kids' WB!, the property's three masked wrestlers will appear in a mini-DVD this fall in a consumer/retailer production from Warner Bros. Consumer Products and Warner Home Video, as well as in Heart of Lucha , a special episodic-compilation video release. Warner Home Video is also readying an original feature-length made-for-video adventure while Warner Bros. Pictures preps a big screen feature film.

In the merchandise arena, Warner Bros. Consumer Products will roll out an array of licensed products and national brand promotions, including the debut of toys, apparel, publishing, party goods, stationery, and accessories beginning in spring 2004. Specific licensees in these product categories have yet to be announced.

Warner Bros. Consumer Products Interactive Entertainment will release a video game title, Code of Masked Wrestling, for Nintendo's GameBoy Advance this winter followed by a version for Sony's PlayStation 2 in 2004.

DC Comics recently introduced a line of limited-series ¡Mucha Lucha! comic books. This month, Harper Collins Publishing releases the first in a series of chapter books.

AOL Time Warner's Warner Music Latina has released a first-season soundtrack CD featuring songs from several popular Latino artists.

"We always believed [¡Mucha Lucha!] had the potential to grow into a valuable property," said Sander Schwartz, president, Warner Bros. Animation. "We're excited and honored that the Studio has agreed to commit all of its resources and select sister companies across our organization to give ¡Mucha Lucha! the 'brand treatment' to create an all-new, long-term franchise for Warner Bros. Entertainment."
