Mega pulls 2.4M magnet toys

WASHINGTON—Mega Brands’ U.S. unit, Mega Brands America, Livingston, N.J., today announced the recall of 2.4 million magnet toys deemed a hazard following 44 reports of magnets coming loose from the toys.

The recall includes 1.3 million units of Mega Brands’ MagnaMan magnetic action figures and a combined 1.1 million units of its Magtastik and Magnetix Jr. preschool magnetic toys.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, no injuries have been reported from the 25 incidents the agency and Mega Brands know of involving magnets coming loose from the company’s MagnaMan magnetic action figures. The figures come in either a "Futuristic Warrior" or "Ancient Warrior" theme. Each figure (pictured below) comes with three accessories.

The recalled MagnaMan SKUs and their model numbers (printed on the front of the product's packaging) are:

The figures were sold at Wal-Mart, Target, Toys “R” Us, Kmart and other toy stores nationwide from January 2005 through December 2007 for about $10. They were made in China.

The recall of 1.1. million Magtastik and Magnetix Jr. preschool magnetic toys follows 19 reports of magnets coming loose, including one report of a 3-year-old boy receiving medical treatment to remove a magnet from his nasal cavity and one report of an 18-month-old boy with a magnet in his mouth, which was not swallowed.

The Magtastik and Magnetix Jr. toys (pictured below) include small flexible parts embedded with magnets that allow the parts to connect to large, colored metal balls. They were sold at mass merchants and toy retailers from January 2005 through December 2007 for between $10 and $40. They were made in China.
