HONG KONG—China’s toys and games industry is optimistic about 2010 being a better year for exports, despite ongoing challenges. This is according to Global Sources’China Sourcing Report: Toys & Games.
This report covers infant toys; dolls, action figures and plush toys; toy musical instruments; role-play sets; building blocks and construction sets; science and discovery sets; craft kits; clay dough and modeling kits; flying toys; inflatable toys; ride-on vehicles; RC vehicles; and electronic toys.
“Despite overseas sales from January to November of 2009 having declined by 11% to 11.5 billion units worth nearly $7.2 billion, 59% of respondents are expecting at least 10% growth for 2010, while 26% anticipate sales growth of within 10%,” said Livia Yip, publisher of the report.
“We also notice that efforts to expand market reach into emerging economies, such as non-EU countries, the Middle East and the Asia-Pacific region, are being intensified as sales to these areas during the first 11 months of 2009 showed significant growth.”
Primary challenges faced by China suppliers:
-
29% cited price competition;
-
26% pointed to stricter overseas standards;
-
15% indicated design copying/piracy;
-
12% cited the cost of raw materials;`
-
9% indicated labor costs; and
-
9% pointed to the Yuan-USD exchange rate.
Improve operating efficiency to gain competitive edge
Over 50% of survey respondents plan to improve operating efficiency, while 21% plan to widen product selection to bolster competitiveness. Others intend to provide more staff training, and adopt measures to help reduce manufacturing costs and shorten design development time.
Yip said, “In response to growing demand for ecologically safe toys, a few top tier companies are releasing models made of environment-friendly materials, such as sawdust and bamboo. On the other hand, many of the toys are designed to introduce children to ‘green’ living. For example, toy cars and trucks come with a solar generator station that recharges the vehicles.”
