Cool Yule

Holiday decoration spending is up. Here are some new offerings for your open-to-buy.

Meredith Schwartz -- Gifts and Dec, 9/15/2010 10:35:16 PM

You might think in tough times, with gift buyers turning toward more practical products, something as non-essential as holiday decorations would suffer. That's not what happened, according to Unity Marketing's Christmas and Seasonal Decorations Report 2010 Update. While spending on spring and summer holiday decorations was off from 2008 levels, spending for Halloween grew more than 18 percent, and Christmas spending rose as well, albeit more modestly. Whether it was because the economy was showing light at the end of the tunnel by the end of 2009, or because economically depressed shoppers had frugality fatigue, consumers opened their wallets more for an extra shot of holiday cheer.
The biggest growth category was outdoor décor: Sales of outdoor seasonal and holiday decorations rose 18.9 percent from 2008 to 2009, while indoor decorations were off by 4 percent.
Now that the economy is improving, Pam Danziger, president of Unity Marketing, predicts, "For 2010 we see clear signs in the data that Americans will invest more in seasonal decorations. [...] Americans are likely to return to the stores to buy new Christmas decorations for their outdoor areas and especially their Christmas trees. [...] They also are likely to make the investment this year toward more energy-efficient lights to replace the old electricity-hogging models." While the news isn't all good for independents - nonstore retailers are the fastest growing destination, and outdoor décor and lights are often offered primarily at mass merchants - savvy store owners can tie in to renewed excitement about trimming the whole home for the season.
