The October 2010 New York Tabletop Market held at 41 Madison, 7 West New York and 230 Fifth Avenue offered buyers the latest in dishes, table accessories and more. And the trends spotted for spring 2011 are for the most part bright and cheery.
Flower Power
Florals play a big role on the table next season. But they take on a painterly look. Lenox and Mikasa introduced
Mikasa
several dinnerware collections with this look. Mikasa's Dining Redesigned line featured four new patterns inspired by watercolors: Garden Palette Bouquet, Garden Palette Floral, Garden Palette Meadow and Garden Palette Vine. Wedgwood's Harlequin Cuckoo design finds inspiration in the company's archive pattern books from the early 19th century. Done in four pastel colors - pink, light blue, peach and pale green - the collection also features a painterly look.
And flowers were the main theme at Waterford as well. The company's latest Fleurology collection includes a range of vases with companion glass flowers. The vases are done in a variety of colors adding to the floral bouquet.
It's not just flowers that are taking center stage, nature themes in general are important next season. The Zrike Company introduced The Birches in it's Vera collection. The dinnerware features tree branches in black on a white plate. Rosanna offered a series of plates with tree and leaf motifs.
Villeroy & Boch
Blue is a strong color in home decor for 2011 and also on the table. Villeroy & Boch's newest dinnerware line, Farmhouse, is offered in both plain white and with blue floral accents. Vietri's Blue Bianca was inspired by an Hermes scarf the designer spotted in Milan. The line includes salad plates, mugs and accessory pieces. Haviland's Liberty dinnerware takes on a more country look with a blue floral pattern.
What's in a Name?
Apparently a lot. For years fashion designers, chefs and celebrities have designed tabletop collections and this season buyers were treated to collections from all of the above.
Donna Karan for Lenox
Donna Karan's extensive tabletop introduction for Lenox included dinnerware, stemware and decorative accessories. The American fashion designer teaming up with the American tabletop vendor was a perfect fit.
Like her fashions, Karan's collection was earthy and organic. She wanted her pieces to have a handcrafted look, and that was certainly achieved. Woods, metals, glass all played prominently in the new line.
Real estate developer, hotel magnate, The Apprentice star and head of The Trump Organization, Donald Trump made a personal appearance in the Rogaska showroom to launch the new collection of Trump Home licensed crystal. Under the brands Trump Home and Trump Crystal Gifts, the collection consists of home accessories, stemware, barware and giftware that have a high-end look but are affordably priced.
Trump joined Rogaska president Bostjan Leskovar for a ceremonial ribbon-cutting and champagne toast. Trump noted that he had already bought some of the collection for his own homes and for his plane.
"My wife is from Slovenia, so we know the company (Rogaska) very well, which is one of the reasons why we felt very strongly about this partnership," Trump remarked. "We are doing well in home [with the Trump Home Collection of licenses]. This was a good, natural partnership or us."
Designer John Rocha has been collaborating with Waterford since 1997. For the first time, the entire collection will be available to the American market. His latest collection, Voya, features an architectural design in black and clear.
The pieces incorporate Waterford's detailed cuts, but in a modern design.
Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver has teamed up with Hermes-Otto International to present a collection of housewares, kitchen linens and entertaining products. The line includes melamine bowls, cutting boards, barware, a hand cranked pasta machine, recycled glassware, tablecloths, oven mitts, aprons and more. The look is simple and
A-Symmetry from Spode
modern.
A-Symmetry is a new dinnerware, serveware and bakeware collection from Spode. The line was designed by British chef Aiden Byrne. The collection is done in all white porcelain, and the best part is the serving pieces can be used to cook in. They can go from the stove to the oven to the table to the refrigerator and back on the stove.
Bright and Bold
Many vendors offered bright and bold patterns this market. Denby's Cosmic, part of its Monsoon Home line, features a contemporary paisley print (a pattern that is trending up for 2011) on its dinnerware. Done in purple, blue, pink, lime and teal, it has soft metallic highlights.
Richard Ginori's Tra le Righe or Between Stripes is a striped pattern in bold colors with botanical accents in the same colors as the stripes.
Elation by Lenox again features bold colors - purple, lime and black - and patterns in both round and square shapes.
Take Note...
Juliska is adding a new category to its line - flatware. The company introduced two patterns
Salt & Pepper
this market, Berry & Thread and Villandry.
Royal Crown Derby is offering its Titanic dinnerware - the same pattern that was on the ill-fated ship almost 100 years ago.
Salt & Pepper is a new company from Australia. Although they've been in business for 15 years, the company is now making its way to America. The company's tagline is "Fashion for the Home" and that includes dinnerware, decorative accessories barware and more.
Structura is a new tea set from Rosenthal. Done in all white with a matte finish, the collection is modern, and includes a teapot, dessert plates and sugar and creamer. The company is also offering a series of vases in the same matte finish. The three collections, Paper, Fabric and Leather are done in black or white. Also new is a starter set for three of Rosenthal's Studio lines: Suomi, Moon and TAC. There are two settings in each set and they come packaged in an oversized paint can.
Nambé introduced three collections this market: Anvil, Cradle and Sunburst.
Rosenthal
Christofle is continuing to expand its jewelry collection. And this market offered a collection of the Seven Deadly Sins by Marcel Wanders.
Sorella Home's new buckets are made of recycled tires, but look like leather. They come in three sizes and will come with a glass insert so they can be used as an ice bucket.
We would love your feedback!
