Caroline Kennedy -- Gifts and Dec, 12/9/2010 4:52:04 AM

Caroline Kennedy,
Editor-in-ChiefNovember. Chill is in the air and the trees are practically bare - at least here in the New York area. In the gift industry, it's an odd time of year. There are no major trade shows to speak of and few new product introductions for vendors to tout (they are too busy tweaking the lines that they will be introducing in January). With their buying for the year complete (except perhaps for last minute fill-ins), retailers are busy with events and deep in the throes of a (hopefully profitable) holiday selling season.
Since this is a time with little in the way of "what's new" to highlight, we take this opportunity to shine the spotlight on different aspects of this great industry: its retailers - our fourth group of 25 Gifted Retailer snapshhots, whom you will learn more about during the coming year; its younger talented individuals - perspectives from 15 Next Generation Gifted Leaders; its socially responsible companies - a look at 10 companies who give back in different ways; and its one charity organization, Gift for Life.
But we haven't forgotten to include some products. In addition to 20 of the best sellers of the year, there's a selection of Valentine's Day offerings. After all, you really do need to start looking beyond Christmas and prepare for First Quarter sales. And to give you more of a head start on the new year, although December is traditionally our "Trends & Forecasts" issue, this issue's "5 Trends from 5 Pros" gives you a preview of things to come.
GDA New LogoSpeaking of things to come ... here's a sneak peek at Gifts & Decorative Accessories to come - our updated logo. The magazine is in the process of being redesigned, a makeover that will make its debut with our December issue. Change is a good thing, if it is change for the better, and this is definitely change for the better.
And while we are on the subject of change, it is my great pleasure to introduce Gifts & Decorative Accessories' new editorial director Warren Shoulberg. While new to G&DA and the general gift side of industry, he is no stranger to the overall industry. He will be weighing in with opinions on issues every month beginning this month on page 10.

Kidding Around

Kids products that combine high play value and a design sensibility that blends with mom and dad's house are sure winners for specialty shops, who can market themselves as an alternative to cheap plastic imports and their problematic safety records.

EcoGreen

Green products have become more of a staple now. The products are not only good for the environment, today's collections also boast great design.

Just for Fun

Vendors' sense of fun was evident this summer with many offering light-hearted and fun accessories for the home and for the self.
