Court Gives Go Ahead to Piers Renovation

GDA Staff -- Gifts and Dec, 2/10/2011 5:09:16 PM

New York - Work on Piers 92 and 94 can start up again, The First Department of the Supreme Court held, according to Bisnow.com. The Piers are home to the New York's Newest and At Home divisions of the New York Intl. Gift Fair, which is run by George Little Management, and are owned by tradeshow management firm Merchandise Mart Properties (MMPI).

The court annulled a lower court ruling in Hells Kitchen Neighborhood Association, et al. v. The City of New York, et al., reinstating approvals granted by the City Department of Small Business Services, the City Planning Commission and the City Council. The Appellate Division found that the environmental review for the project was proper and that an Environmental Impact Statement was not required. So MMPI can now lease, renovate and update the piers' exhibit space.

"We are pleased with the recent ruling. There are still many steps in the process, and we look forward to continue moving the project forward to realize the Piers' full potential," Maura Bruton, managing director of public relations for MMPI, told Gifts & Decorative Accessories.
