THE WORLD IS A SMALL PLACE. AND IN THE WORLD OF INTERIOR DECORATING, DESIGNERS ARE INFLUENCED BY SO MANY CULTURES.
According to Michelle Lamb, editorial director of The Trend Curve, what she calls "Fusion" is a trend to put on your radar.
"For 2011, and moving into 2012, we call the trend ‘Fusion.' It's a combination of diverse cultures - including island and South American influences, plus tribal and nomadic elements - with no one look more important than any other in the mix," she says.
More and more people are embracing various cultural styles and incorporating them into their homes. "First, these looks suggest a global perspective that is a perfect match for someone who is worldly and well traveled. Whether consumers are or not, Fusion suggests they are at least thinking beyond their own back yard," says Lamb.
It's true people are embracing the world and wanting to make a difference. According to Paris-based trend forecaster Nelly Rodi, there are four trendsetters emerging in 2011, one of them being the "FixIts." This group wants to repair things they see as broken in the world. That includes things that have an ecological impact, the conflict between rich and poor, the conflict between emerging and older cultures. This group is more apt to buying local and is attracted to small stores. They're looking for handcrafted items with a fresh, modern sensibility. They prefer fair trade items. It's not that this group isn't interested in the finer things, they want things to be pleasurable, to have a luxe simplicity. This attitude slips nicely into the emerging global trend that is happening right now.According to Michelle Lamb, editorial director of The Trend Curve, what she calls "Fusion" is a trend to put on your radar.

bora.herke stilbüro, a Berlin-based style agency, also sees a global influence emerging. "Mash" is one of four design trends which will be on display at Ambiente in Frankfurt in February. They describe the look as multicultural, with African, Asian and European influences. The style team mentions ethnic prints and folkloric motifs as some of the looks within this trend. "Things and products that tell stories, have an origin, life and soul" are all a part of Mash explains Claudia Herke of bora-herke stilbüro.
"Mash offers the possibility of a very individual taste and a multicolored mix of styles and cultures. Asia and Africa being melted with Europe - individual and colorful," says Herke.
This global trend "will begin with motifs like ikats and Suzanis, and then layer on primitive icons from ancient cultures," Lamb says.
