Specialty Shopping

GDA Staff -- Gifts and Dec, 3/31/2011 3:15:34 AM

Specialty ShoppingDo you only attend gift shows? As gift retailers, this might be all that you need to keep your store well stocked and up to date. After all, gift shows are chock-a-block full of everything you can imagine in a gift store and then some.
If you have never shopped a category's specialty show, you may be missing out.
But as specialty retailers who sell gifts and other categories of things, a gift show might not provide the depth of lines that can be experienced at a specialized show in a particular category. Within the "gift industry" universe, there are a number of trade shows dedicated to a particular category of goods: toys, housewares, tabletop, stationery, gourmet and handcrafted items, as well as furniture, fashion and jewelry.
If you carry any of these categories in some depth and have never shopped its specialty show, you may be missing out. (And vendors, exhibiting at one may give you access to a new buying audience.) These shows offer the opportunity to see many lines in much greater depth than shown at a gift show, as well as vendors that you won't encounter otherwise and may help your store stand out from the competition. While some of these shows have already taken place, some others - the New York Tabletop Market, National Stationery Show and ACRE - are upcoming, so you might want to mark your calendars to see what they have to offer.
Tweet! Tweet! Come and Meet!
Speaking of the National Stationery Show ... Do you Tweet? Have you ever wanted to meet your fellow Tweeters in person to put a face to the Twitter moniker? Gifts & Decorative Accessories and the National Stationery Show offer you the perfect opportunity to do just that! Join us for a Tweet 'n' Greet in the Twitter Lounge on the show floor, where you can meet your tweeting pals face to face and even have your picture taken together in the Tweet 'n' Greet photo booth. Official Tweet 'n' Greet sessions are set for Sunday and Monday, May 15 and 16, from 2 to 3 p.m. We hope that you will take the time out from your busy buying schedule to meet and make friends, and share retail, shopping and tweeting tips with each other ... and us! As an added incentive, Elizabeth Weil, head of consumer marketing, culture and brand at Twitter, will be on hand with tweeting tips and info. She will also be available for one-on-one consultations.

Kids products that combine high play value and a design sensibility that blends with mom and dad's house are sure winners for specialty shops, who can market themselves as an alternative to cheap plastic imports and their problematic safety records.

EcoGreen

Green products have become more of a staple now. The products are not only good for the environment, today's collections also boast great design.
