Lather, Rinse, Repeat

Melissa Haberstroh -- Gifts and Dec, 3/31/2011 4:27:22 AM

MELISSA HABERSTROHMELISSA HABERSTROHThe directions from the shampoo bottle are applicable to merchandising.
Lather = build the display. Rinse = edit your display so props and products that don't support the theme are removed. And repeat those elements in the display, such as color, that help tell the story. Today we apply those elements to a spring display.
Spring is a great time of year for retail. Spring makes customers think of freshness - which usually translates into the "ring" of cash registers as consumers flock to freshen and brighten the home after the long winter months.
I find candles can be more challenging to sell in summer, so I like to create appealing spring displays that feature candles while they're still in high demand. The Nouvelle line offers candles that are poured into unusual garden-style containers which are perfect for spring displays. The neutral colored containers pair beautifully with the natural burlap, Kraft boxes and twig details to inspire the shabby-chic style of this vignette.

I began with a limestone-topped table and antique ladder. We cut plywood to fit on the rungs of the ladder and
stained it to match. This stablizes the ladder and adds shelf space.

The First Steps
I loaded the ladder with candles first, making sure to have enough room for the tester in front. Simple rows on the top shelf looked a little "big box"; I laid one candle on its side, which also allowed room for a riser (see photo lower right).

All in the Details
Detail elements
such as dragonfly trays, insect boxes and iron dragonflies were tucked into various areas of the display.

until the details are perfect. Turn labels right side up - even if unconsciously, customers will notice the pride you take in your merchandising.

Lather, Rinse, Repeat

In this display, certain elements bear repeating: the white containers, both porcelain and ceramic; the natural elements. both in the twig ball and risers and the burlap; the gold in the frame, plates and label embossing; and finally, the reference to spring in the fly and bee motifs.

Kids products that combine high play value and a design sensibility that blends with mom and dad's house are sure winners for specialty shops, who can market themselves as an alternative to cheap plastic imports and their problematic safety records.
