Small Wonders

Pamela Brill -- Gifts and Dec, 8/8/2011 4:40:42 AM

There's nothing insignificant about children's gifts; little kids can mean big business. Whether it's a present to welcome a new arrival or an impulse purchase made with birthday money, children's toys and gifts are clamoring for more shelf space and, much like the customers they serve, deserve plenty of attention. Retailers who know how to appeal to a diverse range of children's gift givers - from girlfriends and grandmothers, to kids themselves - merchandise product that is easily accessible. "Our whole energy is about the kids and [having] them feeling good in our store," explains Bettie Edwards, owner of The Little House in Vashon, WA. The majority of her customers hit the store "with money in their pockets and no boundaries from Mom or Dad," she says. When catering to her young clientele, Edwards stresses that talking to them, not at them is what works. "Getting on the floor and playing cars with them... that's what it's all about," she muses.
