NPD Group Reports Increased Toy and Games Sales for Q1 ‘17

NPD Group 52417U.S. sales of toys and games were on the increase during the first quarter, as reported by The NPD Group.
NEW YORK, NY -- U.S. toy and game sales rose 4 percent in the first four months of 2017 compared to the same period last year, according to The NPD Group. The Games and Puzzles category posted the highest growth at 27 percent, reaching $520.5 million, followed closely by the Youth Electronics category, which rose 23 percent to $113.8 million. Overall toy and game sales reached $4.64 billion from January through April 2017.

Sales increases across several additional categories were reported by NPD: Dolls (+6 percent), Infant/Toddler/Preschool Toys (+4 percent), Outdoor & Sports Toys (+3 percent), Plush (+7 percent), and Vehicles (+2 percent). Three categories saw declines: Building Sets (-10 percent), Action Figures & Accessories (-9 percent), and Arts & Crafts (-4 percent).

"Toy Association members continue to innovate by pioneering new products, embracing technology, and keeping traditional forms of play fresh and interesting,” said Steve Pasierb, president & CEO of The Toy Association. “These early reports of 2017 marketplace success auger well for a year where entertainment properties should perform well, augmented reality and virtual reality hold great promise, and there appears to be residual strength from the past two successful years across a number of categories.”

The provided data is representative of retailers that participate in The NPD Group's Retail Tracking Service, which represents approximately 80 percent of the U.S. retail market for Toys. When factoring up to 100 percent for a total annual market figure, NPD estimates the U.S. market size for the total toy industry to be at about $26.5 billion.
