TORONTO, Sept. 7, 2017 /CNW/ - Retail's dark side is being exposed at Retail Council of Canada's (RCC) Loss Prevention Conference on September 19, 2017 in Toronto.

26 leading loss-prevention professionals will present at the day-long event, including:

  • Toronto Police - Chief Saunders
  • Canada Post - Rita Estwick
  • Walmart - Maria Kouryleva
  • Loblaw - Ron Kornblum
  • Moneris - Patrick Brophy
  • Rexall - Andy Buchanan

As the only loss prevention conference developed by loss prevention experts specifically for retailers, the agenda will offer highly relevant insights and actionable solutions to help retailers protect their companies.

One of the overarching themes of this year's conference is how technology, through any device or platform that helps "connect" people, ultimately creates more exposure and risk for retailers.

In the session entitled New Technologies, New Risks, New Opportunities, Michael Castro, Senior Director of Information Security and Risk Management for Loblaws Companies Ltd, will identify the new threats retailers need to be increasingly vigilant in managing because of robotics, IoT devices, AI, VR and AR platforms.

Also on the rise, and facilitated through the internet, are malicious groups and mobs. RCC will lead a discussion, Action Plan: Rallies, Riots and Other Crowd Threats to Retail Locations, with Longo's Michael Coladipietro, London Drugs' Tony Hunt, Marsh Risk Consulting's Kevin Gordon, about how retailer businesses, often a target or caught in the cross-fire as gathering places where looting, vandalism or even violence can break out, should plan and respond to these unpredictable assemblies.

Other sessions and topics of discussion at Retail Council of Canada's 2017 Loss Prevention Conference will include:

  • organized retail crime networks and how they are gaining power with today's hyper connectivity
  • eCommerce and how it is making fraud easier and further victimizing retailers
  • the "executive criminal" mindset and motivation
  • legal access to marijuana and its management
  • whether "shrinkage" continues to be the right measurement
  • phishing & ransomware attacks
  • privacy and security

"The responsibilities of the loss prevention professional keep expanding and specializing as the retail industry grows from bricks and mortar to online and social-selling platforms. LP teams are now not only helping their companies protect their assets but are also assisting their companies in making fundamental business decisions," said Diane J. Brisebois, President & CEO of Retail Council of Canada. "Fittingly, RCC's LP Conference this year will provide participants an unmatched and timely opportunity to learn from other leading retail LP professionals about how to keep in front of fraudulent, often internet amplified actions and activities that can put their companies at risk."
