2012 Toy of the Year - LeapPad Explorer
New York - The Toy Industry Association's (TIA)12th annual Toy of the Year (TOTY) Awards and Hall of Fame induction ceremony were held on Saturday evening, February 11 in New York City, prior to the opening of the 109th edition of the American International Toy Fair. More than 500 toy industry executives and guests from around the globe gathered at Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center for the glittering gala event. Taking top honors as Toy of the Year was the LeapPad Explorer by LeapFrog Enterprises.
TOTY Award winners are:
• Activity Toy of the Year- LEGO NINJAGO Fire Temple by LEGO Systems
• Boy Toy of the Year - Hot Wheels Wall Tracks by Mattel
• Educational Toy of the Year - LeapPad Explorer by LeapFrog Enterprises
• Game of the Year - Angry Birds Knock On Wood Game by Mattel
• Girl Toy of the Year - Fijit FriendsTM Interactive Figures by Mattel / Radica
• Infant/Toddler Toy of the Year - Elefun Busy Ball Popper by Hasbro / Playskool
• Innovative Toy of the Year - Hot Wheels Wall Tracks by Mattel
• Outdoor Toy of the Year - Rockboard Scooter - Mini by M.Y. Products
• Preschool Toy of the Year - LeapPad Explorer by LeapFrog Enterprises
• Property of the Year - Angry Birds by Rovio Entertainment Ltd./ Striker Entertainment
• Specialty Toy of the Year - HEXBUG® Nano® Hive TM Habitat Set by Innovation First Labs
In addition to the 12 TOTY Awards, two industry notables were inducted into the Toy Industry Hall of Fame: Arnie Rubin, Founder and CEO of Funrise Toy, and the late Frederick August Otto Schwarz, founder of FAO Schwarz. They join a nearly 60 toy industry luminaries who have been inducted into the Hall since its establishment in 1985.
"[This] event was a wonderful way to celebrate the launch of Toy Fair week and recognize the absolute best in toys and children's entertainment," said Carter Keithley, TIA president. "Thanks to the outstanding work of the talented individuals and innovative companies honored tonight, kids around the world are brought joy each day through play!"
The event supports the Toy Industry Foundation, a charitable organization that ensures that children in need have toys and the opportunity to play.
