Thanksgiving Weekend Sales Top 2011 Figures

WASHINGTON - More consumers took advantage of Black Friday and other sales over this Thanksgiving weekend, in comparison to 2011 figures, according to the National Retail Federation (NRF); total spending increased by 13 percent.

This Thanksgiving Day, more than 35 million Americans visited retailers' stores and websites on Thursday, up from 29 million in 2011. The survey, conducted by BIGinsight over the weekend, found that traffic and spending grew over the entire weekend as 13 percent shopped online and in stores. On Black Friday, a total, 89 million people shopped, up from 86 million last year.

A record 247 million shoppers visited stores and websites over Black Friday weekend, up from 226 million last year, according to the survey. The average shopper spent $423 this weekend, up from $398 in 2011, with total spending reaching an estimated $59.1 billion.

Some holiday shoppers even got out earlier than usual to shop with 28 percent at the stores by midnight on Black Friday, compared to 24.4 percent last year.

"From green beans to great deals, millions of Americans found time this Thanksgiving to make the most of retailers' promotions and enjoy a special family holiday," said Matthew Shay, president and CEO, NRF. "To keep their customers excited about holiday shopping, retailers will continue to offer attractive promotions through December, and provide strong consumer value with low prices, enhanced mobile and online offerings, and unique product assortment."
