Special Events

  • "Best in LA" retail tour. January 18, 10:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m. See what's selling and what's new in visual presentation at some of the city's best stores. Tickets are $25 in advance/ $30 on site, including lunch.
  • "Hooray for Hollywood." Gift for Life Opening Night Benefit at the Hollywood Entertainment Museum. January 19, 6:30–9:30 p.m. This first annual event, presented by the CGS and the American Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR) will feature food, dancing, and a silent auction. Tickets are $50, and all proceeds benefit Gift for Life.

Seminars

CGS seminars are $10 in advance/$15 on site, except where noted. All seminars will take place in room 406.

Saturday, January 19

  • "Secrets of Shopping the Show." 9:30–10:30 a.m. Covers Pre-Show Prep, Shopping the Show, Writing Orders, and Post-Show Follow Up. $5 in advance/$10 on site.
  • "Wrap It Up." 1–2 p.m. Learn the basic techniques of wrapping and secrets to in-store gift wrapping service. Speaker: Robin Cohen.
  • "Cashing In on Customer Diversity." 3:30–5 p.m. Seminar reveals buying patterns of shoppers across age, gender, and ethnic lines. Speaker: Eileen Brownell.

Sunday, January 20

  • "Trendmeister: Red-Hot Sellers." 9:30–10:30 a.m. Hear about the hottest trends for 2002.
  • "Five-Star Customer Service." 1–2 p.m. Discuss the five elements necessary to good customer service. Speaker: Eileen Brownell.
  • "Wrapsody." 3:30–4:30 p.m. Add some pizzazz to your basic gift wrapping techniques. Speaker: Robin Cohen.

Monday, January 21

  • "Click n' Buy-ers." 9:30–11 a.m. Get an in-depth look at the online shopping behavior and attitudes of retail customers. Speaker: Chuck Curtis.
  • "Retail Chi." 1–2 p.m. Pick up feng shui tips and strategies for bringing positive energy flow into your store. Speaker: Angi Ma Wong.
  • "Display to Sell." 3:30–4:30 p.m. Learn display techniques that attract customers and stop them in their tracks. Speaker: Barbara Wold.

Look For: LA Contemporary, a new juried division of LA-based designers showcasing contemporary, innovative designs with an emphasis on home furnishings and decor. The division will include projects from the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising and the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. Also within the LA Con-temporary division, area museums will showcase design-directed product lines at the Museum Store Pavilion.

  • Grand Opening of the Permanent Temporary Showrooms. January 18, at 6 p.m. on the second floor. Celebrate with music, champagne, cake, and souvenir gifts from the L.A. Mart.
  • Gift of Nations Silent Auction. January 18, 9 a.m.–

8 p.m.; and January 19, 9 a.m.–6 p.m. Items up for bidding will be displayed in a special section of the Permanent Temporary Showrooms on the second floor. Winners will be announced January 19, at 6 p.m. Items include gifts, decorative accessories, collectibles, tabletop, and furniture donated by tenants of the L.A. Mart. All proceeds will benefit the American Red Cross September 11th Disaster Relief Fund.

  • First Tuesday. January 15. Get a preview of the new California Market Center (CMC), and its top floors of premier gift and home accessories showrooms.
  • View from the Top Cocktails and Shopping. January 18th. On Friday evening, the showrooms on the CMC's 12th and 13th floors will host a cocktail reception and after-hours shopping party. Four companies—California Marketing Associates, Firestone Associates Inc., Raj Imports, and Roger Wilson & Associates—will debut their showrooms at CMC during the January market, in advance of the July 2002 Grand Opening.
